The following week everybody was busy setting up at the
Base Camp. Tents were put up, food was stored and ice
was melted so that they had water to take with them. Once
ready, the climb began starting with short walks around the
camp in the surrounding area. They then started carrying
small loads of equipment up to the next camp.
One of the climbers explained:
”At this altitude it was almost impossible to sleep and you
could totally loose your appetite. Anything you ate could
make you feel a bit sick. In addition, strong winds shook the
tent violently and drifting snow threatened to bury it. It was
so cold that if you lost a glove even for a minute, you would
get frostbitten. You also had to be really careful when climbing
as the thin air made you feel light-headed, tired and apathetic.
