Pick a Card
Number of players: 2 to 4
Materials:
• 60 playing cards
• Master Word List
Directions:
1. Shuffle the playing cards and deal five cards to each player (seven cards for
two players). Place the remaining cards facedown.

2. Each player looks at his or her cards and lays down any matches. A match
consists of a base word card and a suffix card that together make a new
word. For example, the base word card thank and the suffix card -ful make
the new word thankful for a match. If that player also has the suffix card
-ness, he or she can lay down a three-card match to make thankfulness.
Players should check their matches against the Master Word List.
3. After players decide who goes first, play proceeds clockwise. The first
player chooses one of the unmatched cards in his or her hand and asks the
player to the left for a specific card to make a match, which can be the
following:
a. A suffix (-ness, -ful, -less) to add to a base word
b. A base word that can be matched to a suffix to make a new word
(If players need assistance, refer to the Master Word List for
potential base words.)
4. If the player to the left (the second player) has the asked-for card, he or she
must give it to the first player, who must lay down the match.
5. If the second player does not have the asked-for card, he or she says “Pick a
card.” The first player then draws a card from the deck. If the card doesn’t
match, the player adds the card to his or her hand. If that card makes a
match, the player lays down the cards and play proceeds to the next player.
6. Play continues until one player runs out of cards. That player wins the game.
