World Governments
Outline
1) Dictatorship
2) Oligarchy
3) Democracy (Direct Democracy)
4) Republic (Representative
Democracy)
Dictatorship
• One person rule
• Ruler has total control
• Also called “Totalitarian”
• Absolute Monarchs
(King/Queen) are dictatorships
• Examples: Hitler, Mussolini,
Saddam Hussein, Stalin, Castro,
etc.
Dictatorships in the World
Dictatorship Advantages
• Loyalty is
expected and given
• In emergency a
dictator can act
quickly
• No time is required
for debate
Dictatorship Disadvantages
• No personal liberty
• No civil rights
• Dictators are often corrupt
• Personal views of the dictator
become law
• Decision making can often be
flawed
Oligarchy
• Rule by a group or the few
• Examples:
- Ancient Sparta
- The Roman TriumvirateMilitary governments
Oligarchy Advantages
• Decisions made relatively
quickly
• Provides expert leadership
• Avoids single person rule
• Leaders are usually most
educated
• Members of oligarchy work
together (generally)
Oligarchy Disadvantages
• Little personal liberty
• Few/No civil rights
• Leaders can be corrupt
• Personal views of the leaders
become law
• Not focused on “the people”
Direct Democracy
• Citizens have equal power in
decision making
• Example:
- Ancient Athens
- Other Greek city-states
Direct Democracy Advantages
• Every citizen can be
involved in decision making
• Broad support to
government
• Personal Freedoms are
protected (often)
• Considers multiple
viewpoints
• Tend to be peaceful
Direct Democracy Disadvantages
• Debate can be time consuming
• “democracy is the greatest form of tyranny”
• The desires of the majority can trample those of the
minority
• Tends to only work when in a small state or nation-state
• Can pit groups against each other
Republic
(Representative Democracy)
• People elect representatives
who hold the decision making
power
• Examples:
- U.S.A.
- India
- Britain
- Ancient Rome (preempire)
Republic Advantages
• Citizens are involved in
decision making through elected
representatives (lobbying)
• Representatives are aware that
their jobs is dependant upon
pleasing their constituency
• Likely that all people are
represented to some degree
• Representatives are usually
well educated/capable
Republic Disadvantages
• Debate can be time consuming
• Sometimes unable to do
anything due to diverse views
• Representatives may not agree
with their constituency
• Lack of involved citizens can
allow special interest groups to
dominate political action
