Thursday, August 13, 2015 World Governments Outline 1) Dictatorship 2) Oligarchy 3) Democracy (Direct Democracy) 4) Republic (Representative Democracy) Dictatorship • One person rule • Ruler has total control • Also called “Totalitarian” • Absolute Monarchs (King/Queen) are dictatorships • Examples: Hitler, Mussolini, Saddam Hussein, Stalin, Castro, etc. Dictatorships in the World Dictatorship Advantages • Loyalty is expected and given • In emergency a dictator can act quickly • No time is required for debate Dictatorship Disadvantages • No personal liberty • No civil rights • Dictators are often corrupt • Personal views of the dictator become law • Decision making can often be flawed Oligarchy • Rule by a group or the few • Examples: - Ancient Sparta - The Roman TriumvirateMilitary governments Oligarchy Advantages • Decisions made relatively quickly • Provides expert leadership • Avoids single person rule • Leaders are usually most educated • Members of oligarchy work together (generally) Oligarchy Disadvantages • Little personal liberty • Few/No civil rights • Leaders can be corrupt • Personal views of the leaders become law • Not focused on “the people” Direct Democracy • Citizens have equal power in decision making • Example: - Ancient Athens - Other Greek city-states Direct Democracy Advantages • Every citizen can be involved in decision making • Broad support to government • Personal Freedoms are protected (often) • Considers multiple viewpoints • Tend to be peaceful Direct Democracy Disadvantages • Debate can be time consuming • “democracy is the greatest form of tyranny” • The desires of the majority can trample those of the minority • Tends to only work when in a small state or nation-state • Can pit groups against each other Republic (Representative Democracy) • People elect representatives who hold the decision making power • Examples: - U.S.A. - India - Britain - Ancient Rome (preempire) Republic Advantages • Citizens are involved in decision making through elected representatives (lobbying) • Representatives are aware that their jobs is dependant upon pleasing their constituency • Likely that all people are represented to some degree • Representatives are usually well educated/capable Republic Disadvantages • Debate can be time consuming • Sometimes unable to do anything due to diverse views • Representatives may not agree with their constituency • Lack of involved citizens can allow special interest groups to dominate political action Practicing Democracies Today The Preamble We the People of the United States, In Order to form a more perfect Union, Establish Justice, Insure domestic Tranquility, Provide for the common defense, Promote the general Welfare, and Secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, Do ordain and establish this Constitution for the USA.
