Parenting Like a Boss
The other day I read an interesting article called, “How Being a
Good Boss is Like Being a Good Parent.” It was an interesting
concept from a business consultant who wanted to encourage
those who lead in the business world to treat their employees
and teams the way a good parent would treat their own children.
As someone who constantly navigates the tension of home life
and work life, sometimes it’s easy to feel like what I do at work
has little to no bearing on what I do at home. But it was a good
reminder not to think compartmentally about these two worlds.
What if, instead of viewing my work as something completely
unrelated to my parenting, I began to consider ways I can
improve as an individual that will affect both the way I
lead and the way I parent. It’s a win/win.
In the article, they identified three ways a good boss is like a
parent:



They both give positive stress. – At work and at home,
leaders and parents provide the right kind of stress to help
stretch others so they can grow and develop new skills and
abilities. There are actually two kinds of stress. There’s
distress and eustress. Distress is the kind of stress that you
feel when you are being bullied, manipulated, or abused.
Eustress is positive stress, brought on by good mentors and
coaches who are trying to help you to challenge your limits
and succeed. A good boss or a good parent should be
giving eustress, not distress. We can only develop and
grow when we have some degree of stress—which is
something that great bosses and great parents need to
remember.
They both give public support. – Kids and co-workers
need to be recognized publically. They hear the way we talk
about them with others. Sometimes a boss or a parent may
need to be a bit tough, and that’s part of the job. Public
loyalty and appreciation earn relational change for when
you have to have harder conversations one-on-one.
They both let others look good. – A boss, like a good
parent, should be aiming for success. When your kid looks
good, you look good. When your co-workers look good,
your whole team looks good. Pretty simple.
So, what if in some areas you really can improve personally in a
way that affects your professional life and your parenting? I’m
sure there are more than just these three. What are some ways
you are learning to lead that you can apply to your parenting this
week?
VBS is coming soon! June 16th-20th, from 6-8:30pm each
night, we will learn what it means to Live Inside Out! LIVING
INSIDE OUT takes a look at the parables that Jesus told and
how we can take the principles from those stories and put
them into practice in our everyday lives.

Sand vs. Rock (Matthew 7:24-27)

The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)

Bigger Barns (Luke 12:13-21)

Don’t Worry (Matthew 6:25-34)

The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32)
LIVING INSIDE OUT is for kids who are 3 years old & potty
trained through 5th grade (2013-2014 school year).
Interested in helping in some way? There are lots of ways to
get involved! Call the church office at 517-223-9490 or email

This past year, we’ve enjoyed taking kids through a
contextual look at God’s One Big Story. We’ve
traveled through the Bible covering the familiar stories
of Abraham and Joseph, Moses and King David. We
made it all the way to Jesus, Paul, and the start of the
early church.
As the church started, no longer were these just a
handful
of
disciples.
These
were
growing
congregations filled with people from all walks of life.
And needless to say, they didn’t always get along.
They disagreed and argued. They had a hard time
forgiving and serving each other.
Several of the apostles began writing about how to live
together as believers. These writings are not
presented in the form of a story. They are letters. They
are sermons. Delivered by people and for people, they
are historic, but they are not really a story. But we
think it’s important that kids experience those letters
and sermons too. So to help illustrate these important
truths, we’ve wrapped them in a summer-long story
about friendship. We’re taking the summer to look at
what the New Testament letters have to say about
friendship.
Friendship is treating others the way you want to
be treated. Each week, we’ll take a look at a “one
another” principle that gives us a framework for loving
others the way God loved us. Because these verses
are short, we suggest that you take this summer to
memorize each one.
In Week 1, we take a look at what John says about
loving each other in 1 John 4:10-12. Kids will learn that
because God loved us first, we should also love one
another. Our Bottom Line is: Friends love each other.
In Week 2, kids learn from Peter’s teaching on
hospitality found in 1 Peter 4:9. When it comes to
welcoming others, we need to do so without
complaining. Our Bottom Line is: Friends welcome
each other.
In Week 3, kids will start talking about what they know
that they could teach others. In Romans 15:14, Paul
tells the church that they have what it takes to share
Jesus with others. Our Bottom Line is: Friends teach
each other.
In Week 4, we take a look at an important principle
about patience. It’s hard to be a good friend when
people can be frustrating. Paul reminds us
in Ephesians 4:2 that we should put up with one
another. Our Bottom Line is: Friends are patient with
each other.
Finally, in Week 5, kids talk about an important part of
friendship: service. Life isn’t all about us. Paul shares
with us in Galatians 5:13b that relationships aren’t all
about us. Our Bottom Line is: Friends serve each
other.

Ahoy, mateys! Are you ready for the Clubhouse Pirate
Adventure? We are so excited about these next two
months where your preschoolers are going to learn that
the Bible is better than gold. Each week will introduce
preschoolers to a different snippet of truth from God’s
Word and unpack what that means to them.
Week one, preschoolers will discover this amazing
treasure—God’s “teachings are worth more to me than
thousands of pieces of gold and silver,” Psalm 119:72,
NCV. As they continue to hunt for Bible treasures, they
will learn that they were wonderfully made, that God
loves them all the time, and that they are part of God’s
family. They’ll conclude the month with spyglasses to
help them look for ways to help others. It’s going to be
exciting for sure.
We will be praying for you and your preschoolers to
have moments filled with wonders as we take a first
look at the God who loves them, made them, and wants
to be their friend forever.

We’re excited about MarriedPeople! MarriedPeople is a tremendous resource that we will be launching and building over the next
several months. MarriedPeople exists to help couples grow and live out the Core4 Habits of a Great Marriage...
These Habits are encouraged in several ways.
First is the monthly MarriedPeople e-zine. This monthly email is packed with ideas and
insights to encourage and strengthen marriages. Next are MarriedPeople Large Group
Experiences. These will happen about 4 times over the course of a year, and will focus on
one of the Core4 Habits.
These will also be accompanied by short small group
opportunities. The final piece of the MarriedPeople puzzle will be Date Nights. These Date
Nights are entirely doable for any couple because they can happen in less than two hours
and can be done entirely at home. That’s right, minimum cost, no babysitters, and a whole
lot of creativity! For more information, visit www.fowlervilleub.org/marriedpeople, or email
