Mrs. Edith Salmon, form erly of
Plainfield, N. J., now residing in
Portland, Oregon, returning from
a visit to Southampton, England,
her homeland, was a weekend guest
of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Cart
wright, of the BelleWright, 16
Webb avenue.
While describing her travels and
experiences, she mentioned the
name of Gertrude Gardener, a
friend th at she met on the street
in Southampton, who told her that
her sister, Mrs. John Ballentine
had recently moved to Ocean Grove,
somewhere near the ocean.
Mrs. C artw right immediately
became excited and rushed down
to the Moss Lea, 8 Webb avenue,
residence of Mr. and Mrs. John
Ballantlne, arid brought both, of
them to the porch w here Mrs. Sal
mon with others waited.
Both Mrs. Salmon and Mrs. Ballafitine recognized each other after
all these years, nearly a quarter of
a century. They were classmates
together in the sairie- school in
Southampton,,
Conversation was carried on at a
rapid rate about the ocean trip
and conditions in England, hous
ing’, rationing, the food and cloth
ing and the effect it had on the
health of the people.
Sometime later, several ladies,
residents of Plainfield •staying at
the Fairview, 12 Webb avenue,
home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Addis,
came on the porch to pay a visit
and Mrs. Salmon again found old
friends and neighbors of Plain
field, whom she had not seen for
a decade or more. .

and old memories revived. Re
freshm ents were served and an en

method of taking up the free-will
offering at each service.
Nowhere in America can one see
such an array of well-trained men,
marching to the chancel in such
m ilitary precision, as witnessed
twice a day in th at sanctuary.
Careful regim entation and System
on the p a rt of Mr. William E£
Thomson, the “ General” of the
ushers, lias brought this splendidlydisciplined group of one hundred
men into such perfect m ilitary
training.
Those who attended the Metho
dist Annual Conference in Ocean
Grove Auditorium last weelc, where
Methodist Laymen m et for. the pur
pose o f strengthening the say ;ctivities 'in the local churches no
doubt got a new slant on “Churehnutnship,” “Evangelism” and the.
.“Responsibilities of Official Boards”
from the inspiring talks of the
leaders of the Conference; but my
own reaction was, th a t neither said
very much on why there were so
many "m isfits” in our churches to
day. T heir topics were splendid
but the listener was still in doubt
as to encouraging and awakening
new interest in the minds of care
less non-churchgoers.
In my fifty-year experience in
church reporting, I have never lis
tened to anything th a t came up to
Jam es Stalker’s Series of Talks
to laym en on, "The Chief Cause
of Impotence in. Churches,” He
delivered those lectures in my hear
ing- to the Laymen of Glasgow,
Scotland. He had a real name for
it, and called it, “CHRISTIAN
PSYCHOLOGY.”
. Jam es Stalker was no scientist
in the ¡res of the world.. He was
an ardent m inister -of the gospel
in a large city church, with a
membership o i ever five thousand.
He was a w riter; a lecturer, and a
Saint of God, if there ever was one.
He was aiso worried over this
chronic apathy in the m atter of
non-churchgoing, but looked it
‘straight in the eye,’ until he dis:
covered the REAL cause for this
state of affairs. He found th at
since there were so many 'roundpegs-in-square-holes' in .the aver
age church membsvshij), something
had to be done about it. He.-pro
ceeded in a business-like manner to
administer the cure.
He maintained, that the work of
any parish was never intended to
be a “one-man-job,” as some peo
ple thought it was. In political,
circles they had got on fairly well
%vith the Two-party Government,:
but, when it came to doing effectual
work in the M aster’s Vineyard —
Dr.' Stalked insisted in doubling
th a t number — making it FOUR.
Many congregations, he conced
ed, were busy hives of Christian ac
tivity. T hat many churches could
count their workers b y ' the hun
dreds. T hat those huge machines
of Religion, as he called them, were
large a n d - complicated,. and were
manned by many workers, but,
with all this bustling spiritual en
ergy, WAS GOD’S WORK ACTU
ALLY ACCOMPLISHED?
Was
God’s Kingdom becoming more po
tent in the community?
Were
there m ors :carelees «ouls being
won fo r Christ? THAT, he s a i l
W as1the question which should give
them pause'.
I f they thought th a t all this ex
penditure of labor was deepening
Christianity in their churches, they
were only deceiving themselves. In
this connection OUR only hope in
America today, lies in the fa ct of
“KNOWING OUR MARKET " in
other words; knowing our m es and
women, -and selecting the right
kind of men and women, to fill the
job.
When it comes to church-work,
the average pastor’s acceptance of
any applicant’s service, for God’s
work, is too tame and conventional.
The m inister is too easily satisfied.
He takes very little heed as to
whether the pei'son who voluntar
ily offers his services would be a
“round-peg-in-a-sguare-hole,” . or
not. T h e . main question is-, Bis
mind is, so long as they are willing
to give their time and services to
the church, the transaction, as fa r
as he is concerned, is closed.
. Now, this should not be, -God’s
work should NOT be given to MIS
FITS. So far, both M inisters and
Laymen have failed to penetrate
the problem deep enough, As
Christian men and <women, OUR
message to the world —- and to our
community^ should be .“ sold” to
the non-churchgoer by and “‘ex
p e rt" of th is great Machine of Re
ligion, and NOT by any inexperi
enced person who happens along.
(N ext week, “How To Get R esults”
will be discussed.)

Mimosa Tree Blooms
Planted eight years ago by Louis
E. Bronson in his side yard a t 28
Embury avenue, a Mimosa tree has
been in full flower this year, with
hair-like blooms of rainbow colors.
The tree is a native principally of
the American tropics and is £ ra r
ity north of the Mason-Dixon line.
The leaves are sensitive, closing
a t nightfall and opening a t day
break. Mr. and Mrs. Bronson ob
tained the seeds of the tree in his
toric Williamsburg, Va., and nur
tured them in a flower pot fo r two
years. When the sapling was tran s
planted it was given . particular
care before the winter months with
a covering of fertilizer and a sack.
The tree now stands 20 feet, pro
tected from the northeast blows by
a neighboring house.

were graduated last month from

were honor students, ranking
among the top ten seniors in a class
of over 200. Sylvia was editor of
the school paper, “The Acropolis,”

“ Methodism began with six minis

conducted the first Methodist serv

homeland, Australia. Every Sun
day in A ustralia half of the serv
ices are conducted by laymen. All
over the world the church is calling
its laymen to carry their responsi
bility for the enrichment of the
work of Jesus Christ.”
As the main te st of Christian
lives, Dr. Holmes quoted from the
scriptures, "W hat do ye more than
others.”
He declared th at “a
Christian life essentially means
making an interior spiritual suc
cess in the m idst of an antagonistic
external environment.
However
high the standards of the world,
the standards of a Christian m ust
be higher. Christianity, by its
sheer goodness, has made the pa
gan world hang its face in shame.

Prices
The spirit o f the demagogue in
President Truman m anifests itself
in his plea fo r price control
Mr. Truman knows th a t demand
and supply regulate prices. Yet
he talks «bout government control
of prices, as though mere .man can
devise seme better price regulation
than the law of Almighty God.
An officiai of thé National Asso
ciation of Betaii Grocers urged
Friday th a t housewives have, the
m atter of prices in their own hands.
If they will rê-plan th eir menus
and substitute plentiful and -lowpriced foods for scarce and highpriced foods, they will solve the
eost-oî-îïving problem.
Yet the president, would set up
anew a bureaucratic regime such
as during the w ar kept prices
down and failed to provide supplies
for sale at the prices fixed ’.»hile
black m arketeers prospered. —
