Parts of the body
The brain
There is a collection of useful organs inside your body. They all work together. Your
brain controls everything you do. Thinking, speaking, moving, breathing, eating and
sleeping. It is like a computer. It keeps information, so you can learn and remember things,
read and write or count. Your skull protects your brain like a helmet.
The skeleton
Your skeleton keeps your body in shape. It helps you move and it protects the soft parts
inside your body. It has more than 200 hard, strong bones and more than half of them are
in your hands and feet. If the doctor wants to look at them, he has to take a special
photograph, called an X-ray. A baby has got more bones than an adult.
The lungs
The air you breathe goes into your lungs. You breathe about 12 times a minute when
you are asleep and about 18 times a minute when you are awake. Your ribs protect your
lungs.
The skin
Your skin is your body´s largest and heaviest organ. It weighs about 4 kilograms. It is a
waterproof covering of your body that keeps it at the right temperature and shape. It also
keeps out germs. Your skin can be pink, yellowish, brown or black. Nobody else in the
world has the same fingerprints as you.
The heart
Your heart pumps blood all around your body and all parts of your body get the food
and oxygen. It lies in your chest, between your lungs. It is protected by your ribs. Your
heart beats about 70 times a minute. It takes your blood one minute to travel around your
body and back to the heart.
The stomach
When you chew, your teeth change the food into small pieces to swallow them easily. It
takes the meal about 24 hours to travel through your body. The meal spends about three
hours in your stomach.
The muscles
Muscles make your body move. In your face muscles help you chew, yawn, wink, smile
and frown.
