PRODUCT INFORMATION Bongkrekic Acid (ammonium salt) Item No. 19079 Formal Name: (2E)-20-(carboxymethyl)-6R- methoxy-2,5,17S-trimethyl2,4Z,8Z,10E,14E,18E,20Z- docosaheptaenedioic acid, triammonium salt Synonym: Bongkrek Acid MF:C28H38O7 • 3NH3 FW:537.7 Purity: ≥98% Stability: ≥2 years at -20°C Supplied as: A lyophilized solid O O HO O OH O • 3NH3 OH Laboratory Procedures For long term storage, we suggest that bongkrekic acid (ammonium salt) be stored as supplied at -20°C. It should be stable for at least two years. Bongkrekic acid (ammonium salt) is supplied as a lyophilized solid. A stock solution may be made by dissolving the bongkrekic acid (ammonium salt) in the solvent of choice. Bongkrekic acid (ammonium salt) is soluble in the organic solvent DMSO, which should be purged with an inert gas, at a concentration of approximately 100 mg/ml. It is also soluble in water at a concentration of 1 mg/ml. We do not recommend storing the aqueous solution for more than one day. Description Bongkrekic acid is a natural toxin first isolated from coconut tempeh contaminated with bacteria. It is a polyunsaturated long-chain fatty acid derivative that acts as a potent inhibitor of the mitochondrial adenine nucleotide (ADP/ATP) translocase (Ki < 2 nM).1-3 Despite its high affinity, bongkrekic acid has a slow rate of action in intact preparations, as it must permeate the inner mitochondrial membrane to bind the translocase.3 References 1.
