Counselling for smoking cessation needed in
one third of hospitalised respiratory patients

Aim: To investigate the necessity of a health care professional
dedicated to the support of smoking cessation programs
By estimating the prevalence of patients eligible for such a
counselling.

Study protocol
•10 University or major Hospitals in Belgium
• Only respiratory wards (n=14) were participating
• All centres started on Monday 17 Oct. and stopped 31 Oct. 2005
• All admitted patients on 17 Oct were included
• All new admitted patients during this period were included without
exception
• The nurse at admitting filled out the questionnaire

Conclusion
1. Of all admitted patients in a respiratory ward, one out of three could
benefit from support to sustain or start smoking cessation
2. It should be considered in every hospital to engage a dedicated
trained health care profesional willing to give smoking cessation

1.We did a proposal in Belgium to fill out a short smoking cessacion
questionnaire by the nurses at any admission for every patient
2.We developed a extended questionnaire about the patients smoking
status and the willingness to quit smoking, to fill out by the smoking
counselor
