This article contains many facts about the Tundra…..but caution! Your brain will overload of tundra facts, then your brain will explode! Get ready to dig into snow from the tundra! What is it? The tundra is the coldest of all biomes. It covers one fifth of the earth. The tundra is actually the youngest biome in the universe. It was formed 1,000 years ago. That is a very long time! The tundra is full of ice and snow, and it is very dry. You can find the tundra in the Arctic Circle. What kind of animals live in the Tundra? Lots of animals can live and survive in the tundra. And it is not even chilly for them! Lemmings, caribou, arctic hares, polar bears, wolves, muskoxen, and grizzly bears live in the tundra. All of these animals have special adaptations. Many animals, like the polar bear and grizzly bear, hibernate. That’s a adaption. Another adaption is migration. Lots of animals migrate and hibernate. LIST OF ANIMALS THAT LIVE IN THE TUNDRA: ● Lemmings ● Caribou ● Grizzly/Polar Bears ● Arctic Hares ● Wolves ● Orcas ● Beluga ● Walruses ● Muskoxen ● Alaska Blackfish ● Snowy Owls ………….And much much more! Can plants live in the tundra? I was surprised by discovering this but, yes! Plants can survive and live in the tundra. Some plants that can live in the tundra are lichens, small shrubs, and mosses. The growing season in the tundra is only up to 60 days, so the plants do not get to grow for too long. Some other plants that live in this harsh biome are bearberries, diamond leaf willows, and pasque flowers. A diamond leaf willow A pasque flower Where is the tundra located? The tundra is located all over the whole wide world. It is located in Greenland, Alaska, Russia, Northern Siberia, and lastly Northern Canada. I told you the tundra is all over the world!!! It is also very large. It is 3 million square miles long. That is very long! There is actually another Tundra called the Alpine tundra. It is located on treeless mountains all over the world. How cold is the tundra? The Tundra is very cold and dry. It can get up to -30 degrees. That is very very very cold. Snow can get up to 15 to 25 centimeters (6 to 10 inches). The coldness changes all the time. It can get up to -40 degrees. Whoo that is cold! Summer temperatures get up to 32 degrees. That is not as cold as the winter temperature. The Alpine tundra has a colder temperature. It is BELOW freezing! It is close to 21 degrees. Brr! Other facts: ● The word tundra comes from the Finnish word tunturia, which means treeless plain. ● Not many fish can live in the tundra´s waters because there is not a lot of water ● The tundra is ACTUALLY on the TOP of the world!
