Robinson, Christine Rauh During the month of November, students will be finishing Unit II and beginning Unit III. Unit III is about solving a system of equations. We will focus on three main methods of solving systems, including the graphing, substitution, and elimination methods. Students will take these methods and apply them to solve real-world application problems. The students will have three small quizzes and a Unit test toward the beginning of December. As the year progresses, the topics discussed in class get increasingly more difficult. It is imperative that students resolve any problems and seek extra help when needed. Students should not wait until the day of assessment to get extra help, it is too late. As always, the teachers are available for extra help and there is math tutoring offered after school in the library. English Department Celeste Reddy, Mike Vellucci During the month of November English students will conclude “The Odyssey” and begin to tackle the research paper. Students will spend at least two days in the library to familiarize themselves with the database systems available to them containing credible sources. Mrs. Domick will offer lessons in the library to assist the students with how to log into the databases and how to narrow their searches for more specific information. CP and CPA Students will be given additional time in class to begin drafting and editing their research papers. Honors students will complete the majority of their writing for homework. All papers will be due between Thanksgiving and the second week of December. Science Department Brianna Dulio, Phil Cassidy, Josh Hontz, Kelly Dildine Congratulations to all freshman on a successful first semester. In the upcoming months, please be mindful of due dates for all labs and assignments. With the long weekends and holidays approaching, it is important to stay organized and aware of timelines. In Miss Dulio’s class, please remind students to dress appropriately (jackets, gloves, etc) for outdoor labs. Although the temperature is cooler, students are still expected to participate in these activities. As we move into the second marking period, please remember to maintain a good work ethic i.e., complete all homework assignments, submit labs for grading and actively participate in the lesson. Continue to use your agenda book to record when assignments are set and due. Ask questions and seek help as and when needed. As a reminder, Mr.Cassidy’s office hours are Monday through Thursday, 2.30pm to 3.00pm. Mr. Hontz and students in Honors Chemistry will be continuing discussion with atomic theory and the way we view the atom. Quarter 2 starts with familiar discussion on subatomic particles and isotopes but then fades into the quantum mechanical view of the atom. Students will be having a Test prior to Thanksgiving break (November 24th). After the break we will be moving into the discussion on Moles in chemistry. As always, please keep current with the teacher website as information is posted about assessments and answer keys for homework assignments. Mr. Hontz’s office hours are every Tuesday and Thursday (7:30am8:00am & 2:30-3:00pm) in room B17. Miss Dildine and students in CPA Environmental Science are finishing up our unit on Biomes. Then, we will begin discussing populations as it relates to not only humans but other species as well, Remember, that as we move into the second marking period, continue to study and review your notes every night as pop quizzes may occur at any time. Students in CPA Chemistry are currently working on atomic structure and will be beginning to look into the periodic table. As always, remember to keep track of assignments and remember to dress appropriately on lab days. For both classes, make sure to utilize my offices hours and come see me whenever you have a question or need help. I am available everyday from 7:30-8:00 a.m. and 2:29-3:00 p.m. in B-15. History Department Scott Cullen, Larry Varhaul World History will be working on the Renaissance, Reformation and Age of Exploration. We will be looking at the “rebirth” of the classical civilization in the Renaissance. We will be focusing on: The students will understand that the methods of and motivations for exploration and conquest resulted in increased global interactions, differing patterns of trade, colonization, and conflict among nations. The students will understand that colonization was inspired by the desire to have access to resources and markets, often at the expense of the indigenous culture, population, and environment. The students will understand that ideas developed during the Renaissance, Scientific Revolution, Reformation, and Enlightenment led to political, economic, and cultural changes that have had a lasting impact. Students will be working more independently this quarter on various assignments such as a Renaissance Magazine project. Students will be responsible for accessing their own information. Students will be working in and out of the class on materials/sources for independent study.
