They are intimidated by technology because through the years, they never had the technology to use in their day-to-day life. On the contrary, today’s youth do not know how to operate their day-to-day life without technology. Tech Time is an intergenerational program which offers an opportunity for seniors to learn basic technology skills through interaction with youth volunteers. Tech Time is a one hour program that meets twice a month in the computer lab at the Tustin Area Senior Center. Youth volunteers from Tustin Teens in Action assist seniors with questions and concerns they may have when operating their computers, cell phones, tablets, cameras, etc. AN INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAM Tech Time also gives seniors the opportunity to learn how to download apps as well as discover what apps they can use on a regular basis which can enhance their daily routines. Tech Time has allowed seniors to become more comfortable and less intimidated by technology. This special time is a great learning experience not only for seniors, but for teens as well; they learn how to teach, they gain patience, and learn to slow down when speaking and interacting with seniors. It has been a positive experience and our seniors love it! If you or someone you know could benefit from the Tech Time program, call (714) 573-3340 for more info. Tech Time allows seniors to learn how to set up a basic email account and navigate settings on their electronic device(s). Seniors also learn how to use text messaging, send photos, as well as how to upload photos onto their computer and/or social media. | Tustinca.org | 3 WHAT THE HECK IS EL NIÑO? El Niño is a climate pattern that describes the unusual warming of surface waters in the Pacific Ocean and specific atmospheric conditions that together, have the potential to distort weather patterns around the world. If you notice any problems with streets, storm drains or flood control channels, please contact the Public Works Department at (714) 573-3350 during regular work hours. El Niño events occur at irregular intervals of two to seven years. However, El Niño is not a regular cycle, or predictable in the sense that oceantides are. Outside of regular working hours you may contact Tustin Police Department Dispatch at (714) 573-3225. 2016 kicked off with heavy rains and Tustin caught a glimpse of what El Niño has in store for us through late spring or beyond. City staff has made preparations over the past few months and are monitoring known problem areas and flood channels and are available to respond to flooding issues. For immediate life safety or property emergencies, please call 9-1-1. FREE SANDBAG PROGRAM — PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY! SHREDDING EVENT 2 Although this is an El Nino Year and we have gotten some rain, we still need to conserve water. After four consecutive years of drought our reservoirs are still low. Did you know that the average Orange County resident uses 140 gallons of water per day? Now is a great time to make additional changes around the house to reduce your daily water use. Tustin residents did a great job this last summer in cutting back on outdoor watering and helping the City meet its 28% reduction goal, but there are still many quick and easy ways to The City of Tustin is hosting a free document shredding event on April 23, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in front of City Hall located at 300 Centennial Way. Tustin residents will have the opportunity to safely dispose of personal documents and financial records without fear of identity theft. save water inside your house: Each household can bring up to 10 boxes of documents to the event for • Shorten your shower by 5 minutes: save 12 gallons per day shredding. This community event highlights the importance of destroying •Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when full: save 30 gallons per day with drawing attention to recycling. personal information properly, a critical step in guarding one’s identity, along •Immediately repair leaky toilets and faucets: save 20 gallons per day For more information or to register for this event, contact the City Clerk’s Office •Turn off the water while shaving or brushing your teeth: save 5 gallons per day at (714) 573-3026. •Take your car to a carwash that recycles water: save 13 gallons per day • Capture water as it heats up in your shower or sink and use it to water plants And when you are outside remember use a broom instead of a hose to clean your sidewalk and check your sprinklers to make sure they are not watering the concrete. Doing this not only saves water, but prevents pollutants from getting washed into the street and down the storm drain. Water that flows into the storm drain does not get treated or recycled and flows straight to the ocean. Thank you for making these simple changes to save water! Construction is anticipated to begin mid-to-late 2016. Simon Ranch Reservoir, Booster Pump Station, and Pipeline Replacement Project: The Simon Ranch Reservoir is located in North Tustin at the intersection of Valhalla Drive and Outlook Lane within the unincorporated territory of Orange County. The project consists of the replacement of the existing buried, gunite lined, earthen reservoir with a new pre-stressed concrete tank, including a new booster pump station to be integrated within the site, and a pipeline to feed the new pump station and reservoir. Final design is underway. The design effort and approval process is expected to take approximately one year, with construction anticipated to begin late 2016. Peter’s Canyon Channel: Design for the 30’ widening of this channel from the RR tracks north of Edinger Avenue to the southern city limits near Warner Avenue is in progress. The widening will take place along the eastern edge and will ultimately include an extension of the Peter’s Canyon Bikeway. Construction will also include an extension of the regional riding and hiking trail on the western edge and a new Moffett Drive vehicular bridge over the channel. This work is anticipated to begin either in the spring of 2016 or spring of 2017 with completion late in 2017 or 2018 depending upon El Nino-related effects of flows in the channel. Legacy Park: The first phase of the Tustin Legacy linear park consisting of approximately 30 acres between the corner of Red Hill Avenue and Barranca Parkway and Armstrong Avenue is in the design stages. This passive park includes an 11-ac detention basin and a public parking lot at the corner of Barranca Parkway and the future Aston Road extension. Improvements are anticipated to begin in the summer of 2016. Bell Avenue between Red Hill Avenue and Armstrong Avenue: Design for the extension of Bell Avenue from Red Hill Avenue to Armstrong Avenue in Tustin Legacy is underway. This roadway extension will support the new Advanced Technology and Education Park currently in planning stages by the South Orange County Community College District. Construction should begin late 2016. Moffett Drive west of Tustin Ranch Road and Kensington Park Drive south of Valencia Avenue: Design for the short extensions of Moffett Drive west of Tustin Ranch Road and Kensington Park Drive south of Valencia Avenue in Tustin Legacy is underway. These short roadway extensions will allow later access for construction purposes to the new Legacy Academy School Facilities Project currently being planned by the Tustin Unified School District. Construction is anticipated to start late 2016. Edinger Avenue Well - Phase II Equipping Project: The project is located on Edinger Avenue adjacent to the recently constructed Marriott Hotels. Drilling of a new water well was completed in coordination with construction of the hotels. Construction of the Phase II project, which includes a building to house the well and installation of equipment, is underway and is anticipated to be complete by the end of summer 2016.
