of the children’s stories using the computer to aid in this process. Nadine
and Fran suggested Kylie as one of the children I might like to follow as
part of my research as she is a great storyteller.
Kylie and I did not know each other but it did not take very long before
Kylie was sharing her stories with me. When I shared these stories with the
other teachers they told me that her stories were a bit different, usually
she tells stories about Princesses and other favorite things but the stories
Kylie has been telling me are about her family – I have liked these stories
Kylie as it has given me the opportunity of getting to know your family.
When Kylie said ‘Kylie and Lucy’ she asked if she could type that, which she
did and then I showed her how to do a space, then and, and another space
to separate the words. Kylie then had Kylie and Lucy in all of her stories
that she shared with me and the next thing she wanted to do was to type
her story herself, which is what she is doing currently.
Kylie’s typing of her story has slowed the story telling process down,
although her story ideas are just as complex as ever. I have begun to write
her stories for her on a piece of paper so then she can type the stories
herself.

Kylie has got to a point in her story telling where she is ready, willing and
able to begin to write her own stories. Over time she has explored the
notion of story telling and has been telling some complex stories. Kylie is
gaining confidence in using the keyboard. She is able to type some of the
words familiar to her and has quickly picked up some of the conventions of
word processing – space for example.
What is next for Kylie?
I would like to continue to support Kylie in her own story writing, whether
this is on the laptop or on paper. One of the programmes on our laptops is
Kid Pix, which gives children the opportunity to be creative, Kylie could use
this to write and illustrate her stories. These could then be saved into a

Kylie continues with her story telling with a new twist as I have brought a
microphone into kindergarten and children are able to tell their stories
straight into the laptop.
After recording her story Kylie thought she might paint some pictures to
support her story and photograph these to make in to a movie which she has
seen done for another child. I was away from kindergarten for a few days
and when I came back, we had another discussion about what she wanted to
do for her pictures. We talked about the possibility of Kylie taking the
camera home to photograph animals and other things that would make good
props for her story. Kylie was eager to take the camera home and I was
very keen to see what she came up with the next day.
The next day:
Kylie had taken a lot of photos and we worked together to choose the ones
that went with her story. We listened to each part of her story and then
chose a photo to support that part of her story and inserted it into movie,
we then used some thing called the Ken Burns effect, which gives the illusion
of movement and enables specified viewing time for each photo.
After we had completed this Kylie asked if she could sing a song into the
microphone. We used the application garage band to record her song and
within this programme there is the option of adding instruments, Kylie chose
the drums, but I had trouble getting it to work, so we are going to revisit
this when I have the process sorted.
The next day:
Today Kylie reminded me that we had not finished her song so we went into
the office to work on it. Luckily I had had a play with it at home and was
now able to show Kylie how to insert the loops of music. Kylie chose the
piano and drums to accompany her song and seemed pleased with the result.
What learning happened for Kylie?
Kylie I have enjoyed getting to know you over this term, finding out what
you can and what you enjoy doing on the computer. I have seen that you
are an amazing storyteller and I was so pleased to be able to give you the
opportunity to take my camera home and photograph toys to support your
story. I was pretty impressed with the song that you sung and then we had
to learn how to use Garage band together. Thank you Kylie.
In my last learning story I thought it would be valuable to give Kylie the
opportunity to extend her story telling further by using the laptop. This
learning opportunity has extended Kylie’s story telling. I would not have
thought of recording a song and to me this is an indication of Kylie’s’
creative ability.
Opportunities and Possibilities:
I finish working at the end of this term at kindergarten, but I look forward
to hearing about what you do next Kylie. Both Fran and Nadine know how to
use the microphone and I am sure you will have the opportunity to record
more of your stories.

Once upon a time the princess went out to the pond. And then she got out her ball and she
played with it. She dropped it in the pond and she was sad. She went home but she didn’t
buy a new one and then she told the king, and the king said, “Your friends are coming
over for dinner and pudding. It’s your party, and they are bringing all new balls for you.
But you have to go under water and find your other ball too.”
Her friends came when she was diving under the water and then when she came out of
the water she had dinner and tea and party food. A princess that was her friend, turned in
to a frog because she was magic. They had Cherio’s, and M&M’s and chicken nuggets,
and lots and lots of muffins. They even had a birthday cake.
If she gave the frog her necklace and her ring, the frog would dive under water and get
her ball. This was the second time she dropped her ball. “You have to give me a kiss and
I will turn in to a prince.” That’s what the frog said.
The princess kissed the frog but then because he wanted to turn in to a pea, he kissed the
princess, dived in to the water and got eaten by a shark. Then he turned in to a pea
because he was magic. Then he jumped on to dry land and he lived happily ever after.
The princess turned in to a prince because she kissed the frog, but she lived happily ever
after too.

Once upon a time Barbie and the Pussycat had fairy bread for breakfast.
And then they went out because they were buying more bread because they
had run out. And they buyed cheerio’s, and then they went home to make
some toast with banana on it. And then the pussycat had a sleep on the
Barbie’s bed, and then the Barbie washed the bed because the pussycat had
put fur on it, when it slept on the bed. Then the Barbie went out because she
really needed to buy more party food for her party, and then she came home
and the pussycat went to her own room and had a sleep on here own bed.
And then she had her party and all of her friends come over, all the people in
the whole wide world, and they all bringed different presents, but some of
then had the same presents. And only two of them had the same presents.
And then the Barbie and the pussycat both got a white board to draw on.
And even they got some pencils.

Once upon a time Sandy found some treasure at the bottom of
the sea. And then the Mermaid princess came to see Sandy, and
then she swam off and Sandy followed, and then Marina the
Mermaid princess was standing and she said, “ Would you like
some more treasure because there is another treasure box at the
bottom of the sea.”
Then Sandy said “yes”, and he used them to make his castle even
shiner. And then he went under the sea to find the treasure box,
with and ‘x’ on it. And then Marina saw his dolphin silver fin, and
Sandy followed, because Marina let him join her friends. And
then John and Wendy went under water, because they were
Marina’s friends, and then they both went home, Marina and
Sandy and had fairy bread for dinner and then they both went to

Once upon a time the bears went out because their porridge was too hot
and then they went out, Lucy and Kylie came to the tree bears cottage.
And then Lucy and Kylie could stay their and their parents because the
three bears found a new home. They didn’t know it was Kylie and
Lucy’s home because the three bears didn’t like Kylie and Lucy’s house.
They were far away on a hill passing the three bears.

Once upon a time Kylie and Lucy and Mum and Dad went to rainbow’s end. Kylie and
Lucie went on a fast roller coaster and it was faster than anything in the whole world.
Then they went on the ferris wheel and Mummy and daddy watched and then asked if
they had brought lunch and they said, ‘yes, and if you eat all your lunch you might get an
ice cream from Rainbows End.’ Then they got an ice cream because they ate all their
lunch. Then they went home and Lucy had a nap. Then Daddy went out to look at a
house that was for sale and then he came back with another ice cream and we had two ice
creams in one day. Then they went back to Rainbows End for more of a play and Lucy
went on the fast roller coaster again, by herself and she wasn’t scared.
Then Lucy went
in the ferris wheel and I watched with Mum and Dad. Then Lucy went on the log flume
with Kylie and Mum and Dad. Then they went home and then they had dinner and then
they had pudding, had a bath and then brushed their teeth, readed a story and then went to
bed.
