Newspaper/Newsletter Assignment: “The Devil
and Tom Walker”
Directions: Students will be divided into small groups of 2-3 and
will complete the assignment explained below. Students will be
given a rubric of assignment expectations.
Required Components:
1. Give your newspaper/newsletter a title
2. Write obituary entries for Tom Walker AND for his wife
3. As a journalist, write an article explaining what happened to
Tom Walker.
4. Write an advertisement for Tom’s loan shark business. Be
sure to use TWO satirical examples as a part of your ad.
5. Write a letter to the editor discussing the story’s central idea
and lesson(s) that should be learned from Tom’s experience.
6. Include four images/graphics in your newsletter. Make sure
these are neat, visually appealing and correlated with the
content. You may print images from the internet or utilize
your own drawings.
