Commercialization Specialist at NASA Job Overview: Location / Type Hiring Timing Greenbelt, MD / Full Time Position May fill the position as early as Aug. 12 (i.e., interested parties should apply immediately) Description: The Commercialization Specialist (CS) will provide onsite support within a NASA technology transfer office (TTO) which brings federally-funded inventions to market and forges partnerships with industry. Will include involvement in nearly all facets of technology transfer including invention harvesting from researchers, invention evaluation to identify technologies with strong commercial potential, and invention marketing to entice licensing / partnership demand from target companies. Requirements: • 0-2 years of work experience • Bachelors degree in a science or engineering discipline (electrical engineering or computer science strongly preferred). Masters degree in engineering management preferred, or other training that has built competency in intellectual property (especially patents) and commercialization fundamentals. • Interest in understanding, evaluating, and marketing technologies (as opposed to developing technologies). • Ability to efficiently, effectively, and tactfully interact with technologists to extract information regarding invention descriptions, benefits, and applications. • Must exhibit strong initiative as an individual and interpersonal skills as a team member. • Willingness to learn about and market technologies across a broad range of science & engineering domains. • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and especially Excel. Duties: • Assist colleagues in designing and implementing initiatives to increase internal (in-reach) and external (out-reach) awareness regarding the TTO's services and licensing / partnership opportunities, respectively. • Harvest invention disclosures and partnership leads from researchers. Includes direct inventor interactions, attending internal R&D reviews/meetings, and evaluating scientific and engineering technology papers and presentations. • Evaluate inventions for commercial potential and Identify target licensees through primary and secondary research. • Aid in the development of marketing materials to communicate licensing/partnership opportunities to industry. Such materials may include e-mails, technology brochures, Web sites, press releases, presentations, posters, and tradeshow displays. Will also include generation of periodic TTO publications and as-needed communications. • Identify target licensees and/or collaborative partner organizations, and support the development of strategic plans. • Distribute marketing materials to target licensees/partners and facilitate interactions to generate partnership interest. • Conduct special, often quick turnaround, projects upon request.
