SSEBE Lab Access &Security
- Electronic door access (ISAAC) is now submitted
online. The link is found on the SSEBE home page:
http://engineering.asu.edu/sebe
- Fill out a key request form if you need access to an area
that requires a key (no ISAAC security available).
- We need to take security very seriously……

SSEBE Lab Safety Guidelines
A Message from the SSEBE Director
ASU has very strict policies regarding the unlawful use, possession,
production, manufacturing, and distribution of alcohol, other drugs,
and controlled substances on campus. This is described in SSM
106-03: Alcohol and Other Drugs on Campus.
I want to make it perfectly clear that any SSEBE employee or student
who violates the Drug-Free Workplace policy will be subject to
prosecution and punishment by the civil authorities as well as to
disciplinary procedures by the university, which will result in the
immediate termination of employment and sanctions in reference to
continued participation in the graduate program at ASU.

Professor and Sunstate Chair

Purchasing Chemicals
- Each laboratory has a chemical inventory. If you want to purchase
a chemical that is not in our inventory, obtain the MSDS and then
contact someone from the Lab Support Group. We will work with
you to make sure the proper PPE is in place and also discuss
substitutions where applicable.
- All chemicals are purchased using ASU SunRise. Please contact
Jhanaye, Peter, Tyler, or Ken if you need help ordering chemicals.
- We are not allowed to have hazardous materials delivered to the
ECG 252 mail room. All hazardous materials need to be delivered
through DCB Stockroom Services (department of Chemistry and
Biochemistry).
- DCB Stockroom Services will contact you when the order has been
received.
- Use a bottle carrier to transport hazardous chemicals.
- After receiving your order, bring the packing slip to Jhanaye in
ECG 252.
SSEBE Department Truck
Faculty will request who needs to be
authorized within their group.
Complete the “Defensive Driver” training.
Orientation of the department truck with Peter
Goguen or Tyler Harris.
Your name is added to the “approved drivers
list” that the department office refers to when
signing out the truck.
SSEBE Mandatory Safety Training
Fire Extinguisher training and Annual Fire
Extinguisher retraining (all ASU employees).
Laboratory Safety and Annual Laboratory
Safety retraining (laboratory employees).
Bloodborn Pathogen training where needed
(Biodesign labs, Environmental Microbiology).

SSEBE Lab Safety Guidelines
Closed toe shoes and safety glasses are required
in ALL SSEBE laboratories.
Closed toe shoes, safety glasses and lab coats
must be worn when working in ALL environmental
engineering labs.
You are not allowed to eat or drink in any
laboratory.
Experiments intended to be performed after normal
work hours need prior approval as detailed in the
After-Hours Approval form.
SSEBE Lab Safety Guidelines
Any work being done in any SSEBE laboratory after normal work hours and/or weekends
requires an AFTER-HOURS OPERATION form to be filled out. This form is found on the main
SSEBE web page. Work of a clearly hazardous nature must not be conducted after hours.
Such activities must be scheduled during normal working hours. If an emergency should arise
after hours, there is limited response capability. This would include tasks involving high
temperature, acute toxics (i.e. cyanogen bromide, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide,
hydrofluoric acid), explosives, large volumes of cryogenic liquids, or high pressure situations.
Responsibilities:
Principal Investigator (Supervisor):
• Determine which experiments/procedures are allowed to be conducted after-hours.
Determine what extra safety measures should be taken for each after-hour operation.
Laboratory Manager / Coordinator:
• Ensure all workers in the area are aware of hazards and are trained in all appropriate
procedures.
Worker:
• Do not work alone when working with a hazardous experiment or when working after hours.
If the experiment will be operating unattended, make sure all efforts have been taken for it to
be operating properly and clearly label emergency contact information.
SSEBE Lab Safety Guidelines
If you need to borrow any tools or supplies,
get permission and then bring it back or have
it replaced!
Keep your work area clean.
If something is not working properly in the
lab, report it immediately to the Lab Support
Group.
Label all of your samples / solutions
(description, date, and your name).
SSEBE Lab Safety Guidelines
If you injure yourself while working at ASU, we
need to make sure you receive the necessary
medical treatment and we have to fill out the
necessary Workman's Compensation
documentation. Please contact someone from the
SSEBE Lab Support Group for help with filling out
these forms.

HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL
To schedule hazardous waste pick up:
access the EHS web site http://cfo.asu.edu/ehsenvironmentalaffairs
Waste must be in an approved container with a hazardous
waste tag properly filled out.

Sheharbano Sangji(1985-2009)
On December 29th, 2008, the 23-year-old research assistant working in a chemistry lab
in UCLA attempted to transfer a quantity of a chemical called t-butyl lithium from one
container to another. This material is pyrophoric and ignites on contact with air. That
was what happened when something went wrong with the syringe Sheri was using. She
was not wearing a lab coat and the synthetic sweater and flammable gloves she wore
burst into flames. She apparently ran away from, not toward, the lab's shower. She
succumbed to her injuries on 16 January at a hospital burn center
SSEBE Laboratory Safety
The chemistry student was working alone in the
lab with a small amount of thionyl chloride, a
substance commonly used in organic chemistry
experiments, when it exploded, according to fire
department spokesman Steve MacDonald.
A chemical reaction that injured a Boston
College student caused the evacuation of
the Merkert Chemistry Center. (Jonathan
Wiggs/ Globe Staff)
The doctoral student, Hee Yeon Cho, received
cuts on her face and minor burns on her hands,
he said. After the beaker broke, Cho put a paper
towel over the cut on her cheek and then drove
herself home.
Her return home complicated the cleanup effort:
Crews also had to decontaminate her car and her
apartment in Brighton.
What to do in an emergency
In an emergency, pull the fire alarm.
Call 911 from a campus phone. If you use a cell phone, let
the dispatcher know you are calling from ASU so that they
can connect you to ASU DPS.
Follow general safety precautions such as close fire doors,
use fire extinguisher where possible, and evacuate the area.
Communicate all vital information related to the emergency
to the DPS and Fire Department.
Reassemble in a designated safe area.
