How To Email and Get Ahead in Life . . . at Truman at Least
Here at Truman, you are going to send lots of emails to faculty members and staff in the
various university offices. These aren’t text messages or tweets. You need to remember
to step up your game when emailing faculty and staff.
First, write an email like you would a more formal letter. It should include a salutation
(Dear Dr. Smith, or Good Morning Melissa) and end with a closing (Sincerely, Your Name,
or Take Care, Your Name). Also, include a relevant subject in the subject line.
Second, the language should be professional. A succinct email is good, but there should
be actual words and sentences with capitalization, punctuation, and grammar. Spelling
counts too! If you cannot do this from your phone, email from a computer.
PS, here in MO, you can call
him Zac. There’s no need for
the more formal “Mr. Burden”
in emails.
Third, be kind in your communication. Many times, you are asking the person you are
emailing to assist you with something. The attitude you convey in your email will impact
the response that you receive.
For more information about improving professional communication, stop by the Career
Center in the Student Union.

Burned Out Light Bulbs? Put Them on the Light List!
If the light bulb in your room burns out, or if you notice a one
that has burned out in a hallway or lounge, head down to the
hall desk. There you can list the room number or location of
the light that needs replacing. The housekeepers will then
swing by and replace the light for free. There is no need to sit
in darkness.
Truman Basketball on Fire! Check Them Out Thursday.
Have you been following Truman basketball? If not, you’re
missing something great. The women have won seven in a
row (13-4 on the season), and the men are 13-6 overall.
There will be a double header Thursday, 5:30 and 7:30, in
Pershing. As always, students are free with their Truman ID.
Peace Corps Informational Meeting
Peace Corps information sessions are being held on campus
a few times this semester. Have you ever considered this
experience after graduation? The next session will be on
Wednesday, March 19th.
You will find an information table in the Student Union
10:00am - 2:00pm. Afterwards, the Career Center is hosting
an informational meeting at 3:00pm in the SUB Georgian
Room C.
Many Truman students join the Peace Corps each year and
serve around the world. Make sure to stop by and pick up
some literature or attend one of the information sessions to
educate yourself about the organization and the opportunities it presents to you.
Yeah it's been a bumpy road. Roller coasters, high and low. Fill the tank and drive the car. Pedal fast; pedal hard. You won't have to go that far. You wanna give up 'cause it's dark. We're really not that far apart. So let your heart, sweet heart be your compass when you're lost, and you should follow it wherever it may go. When it's all said and done, you can walk instead of run 'cause no matter what you'll never be alone.
