THE CLUB MEETING • The person who chairs the 4-H meeting and votes to break a tie is the president. • The secretary records what happens at club meetings and reports back at the next meeting. • The treasurer reports how much money was spent and received. • According to parliamentary procedure, most motions should be seconded before discussion takes place. NUMBERS • There are about 26,000 4-H members in Canada. • There are about 2,000 4-H clubs across Canada. • Saskatchewan has the 3rd highest enrolment in Canada. Ontario is 2nd and Alberta has the highest. • Across Canada, the beef project has the highest enrolment. • There are about 3,011 4-H members in Saskatchewan. • There are about 770 4-H leaders in Saskatchewan. • There are 194 4-H clubs in Saskatchewan. • There are 37 4-H core projects in Saskatchewan. • There are 41 4-H districts in Saskatchewan, which are divided into 4 regions. • The beef project has the highest enrolment in Saskatchewan. • The light horse project has the 2nd highest enrolment in Saskatchewan. • The 4-U Self Determined project has the 3rd highest enrolment in Saskatchewan. REGULATIONS • To be an eligible 4-H member, a youth must be at least six years of age on or before December 31st of the membership year. • To be an eligible 4-H member, a youth must not be more than 25 years of age on or before December 31st of the membership year. • 4-H member age groups are as follows: (all ages are on or before December 31st of the membership year; i.e. if you are 8 years of age at the beginning of the club year and then turn 9 years old after December 31st you are still considered a Cloverbud until the end of the club year) Cloverbud – 6 to 8 years of age Junior – 9 to 12 years of age Intermediate – 13 to 15 years of age Senior – 16 to 21 years of age Future Leaders – 22 to 25 years of age • At least four members are needed to form a 4-H club. • To complete the 4-H year, every member must: a) Register in a project. b) Complete a Record Book. c) Complete a questionnaire consisting of general 4-H knowledge questions provided by the provincial office and project-related questions provided by the project or general leader. d) Exhibit or demonstrate project work. e) Participate in Public Speaking at the club level. f) Follow the constitution and/or policies of the club in which they are registered. • Each club must hold a minimum of 3 general meetings per membership year. …/2 (over) 2013 4-H Facts and Information, page 2 SYMBOLS • The 4-H colours are green and white. Green stands for agriculture, growth and youth, and white for purity. • The 4-H motto is “Learn to do by doing”. • The four H’s stand for head, heart, hands and health. • The official Canadian 4-H Emblem is a cloverleaf with 4 H’s on each leaf and the word “CANADA” on its banner. • The Saskatchewan 4-H Council’s Mascot is Harold the Hare. • The Canadian 4-H Council’s Mascot is Frisco the Fox. • The colours of the Canadian 4-H Logo are green and white. ADMINISTRATION • There are 4 Regional 4-H Specialists in the province who work directly with clubs, leaders and members. • The Saskatchewan 4-H Council, a not-for-profit organization, administers the Saskatchewan 4-H program. • The Saskatchewan 4-H Council’s decision-making is done by the Board of Directors, which includes representation from all regions of the province. • Our Board of Directors is a volunteer board, which means that individuals are not paid for their time contribution. • Executive members of the Board of Directors are elected for one-year terms. • The Saskatchewan 4-H Foundation is a registered charity. • 4-H at the national level is the responsibility of the Canadian 4-H Council. • The Saskatchewan 4-H Council annual general meeting takes place in March/April. This is where new Board of Directors members are elected and resolutions are voted on for changes to policies. • All districts have the opportunity to send two delegates (one member, one leader) to the annual general meeting. This ensures that every district is able to express their opinions and concerns through the voting process. OTHER INFORMATION • National 4-H Month is held in November each year. • The first 4-H clubs in Saskatchewan were formed in Dubuc, Tantallon, and Colgate in 1917. • The very first 4-H club in Canada was formed in Roland, Manitoba in 1913. • The Canadian 4-H Council office is located in Ottawa. • The Saskatchewan 4-H Provincial Office is located in Saskatoon. • Saskatchewan 4-H publishes a quarterly newsletter called “4-H Bits & Pieces”. • The Saskatchewan 4-H Council was named the 2011 recipient of the prestigious Donner Award for Education.
