Because it can be challenging to find alternatives, Emergency/Trauma Services at GHS has assembled this booklet about health resources in the community. Please note that we strive for accuracy but realize that community services change, so we urge you to contact providers beforehand. Finding a Primary Care Provider Everyone would benefit from having a primary care doctor and what is called a medical home. Doctors or nurse practitioners specializing in family or internal medicine provide routine, non-emergency care. Some practices accept only adults or children while some care for both. Primary care doctors can manage your medications, offer education and care to prevent illness and, when needed, make a referral to a specialist. Having a primary care doctor will help you access primary health care more conveniently in the community than in the emergency room. If you have private health insurance: You can establish care with any primary care provider who is taking new patients. Ask family or friends if they have a provider they would recommend. Do you want a provider who is near your work or your home? Do you want one who accepts children and adults? Always check with your insurance carrier and/or human resources department to make sure the provider you choose is covered by your insurance. GHS has one of the largest multispecialty practices in the state, with more than 600 doctors, including approximately 200 primary care physicians located across the Upstate. To find a doctor near you, please call the GHS consumer information and physician referral line at 1-877-GHS-INFO (447-4636). You also may go online to ghs.org and click on “Find a Physician.” MD360® Urgent Care GHS also features a new primary care medical practice offering urgent care, primary care, sports medicine, physical therapy, lab and X-ray services. Fortunately, other options exist. Most counties have free clinics that offer health care to people, with qualifying income levels, who do not have Medicare, Medicaid or any kind of medical benefits. Some health clinics offer reduced-fee programs, based on income verification, for patients without insurance. Free Clinics Free clinics need proof of address in the county where you seek services and proof of household income. There is no charge for the visit, labs or most X-rays. It’s important to make sure you are taking advantage of all the help available to you. Free Antibiotics Many grocery store and discount store pharmacies offer some of the most prescribed antibiotics for free. Most notable are the Publix and Bi-Lo pharmacies. This offer is open to all, regardless of insurance or income. Low-cost Generics Walmart pharmacies first offered many generic medications for $4 a month. Other pharmacies such as Kmart, Bi-Lo and Target pharmacies now have similar programs. If you use other pharmacies regularly, ask if they can match these prices. More medications have been added recently, some at slightly higher cost. If you have access to a computer (you can use the public library), you can visit the website for any of these stores and print their list of low-cost generics OR you can request a list at the local pharmacy. If your medications are not on the list, ask your doctor whether he or she can approve a generic equivalent or switch you to another medication on the list. Free Clinics To be eligible for free clinic services, you cannot have Medicare, Medicaid or any health insurance and you must meet income guidelines. Many medications are free, but most clinics also use a medication assistance program called Welvista that requires an application fee. That is usually the only cost associated with a free clinic. Medicare or Medicaid Medicare Part D is the medication assistance part of Medicare. It is necessary to select a plan from many choices based on your coverage needs. Your pharmacist might be the best person to help you select a plan that meets your medication needs. Medicaid covers a certain number of prescriptions per month with low co-pay. Both programs have limits to their coverage for medications, and having Medicare and/or Medicaid may exclude you from eligibility for a pharmaceutical company’s medication assistance programs. (See “Low-cost Generics” on previous page.) These lists may help you determine which medications to have covered under your plan (the most expensive) and which to pay for yourself (the least expensive). Patient Assistance Programs Most pharmaceutical companies have programs for their more expensive medications and those for which there is no generic alternative. There are eligibility requirements regarding income levels, proof of citizenship in some cases, and financial documentation is always required. Your pharmacist can tell you which pharmaceutical company makes your particular medication. To obtain a patient assistance application form, go to the website of the pharmaceutical companies or ask your pharmacist. A good website, www.needymeds.com, has applications for most of the pharmaceutical companies’ patient assistance programs. Partnership For Prescription Assistance offers help to determine eligibility for a variety of patient assistance programs and provide you with the applications. Call 1-888-4PPA-NOW or visit www.pparx.org. Welvista Formerly known as Communicare, Welvista is a healthcare network that represents 12 pharmaceutical companies. Welvista offers access to more than 160 medications with one application and fee. These are brand-name medications, not generics. Most free clinics access this program, though it is available to anyone who meets the eligibility requirements. Chronic Pain Management For the best management of chronic pain, you need one doctor who knows your medical situation and can manage your pain medications safely and effectively. This may be your primary care provider or a pain management specialist. If your primary care provider does not feel comfortable prescribing such medications, you need to discuss a referral to a pain management specialist. Most specialists will not take a referral from the emergency room. This must come from your primary care provider. Here is a list of some practices specializing in pain management. If you received follow-up treatment elsewhere, you need to return to the treating provider or your primary care provider to get a release to work. These providers will address your functional capacity for a particular job. Dental services are not available in the emergency room, though you may be seen for an abscess or infection related to a dental problem. You need to see a dentist to address the underlying dental problem. Listed below are free and low-cost options for dental services. Non-emergency Orthopaedic Care Routine orthopaedic follow-up or evaluation and treatment of long-standing orthopaedic problems is best managed in an outpatient office setting. If you have missed your appointment for evaluation or follow up with your doctor, you need to arrange another appointment. The emergency room is for evaluation and treatment of acute problems requiring immediate evaluation. Here is an alternative to the emergency room for acute orthopaedic problems and fractures: Steadman Hawkins Evening S.H.I.F.T. 200 Patewood Drive, Suite C100 Greenville, SC 29615 (864) 454-7422, M-F 6-9 p.m. No appointments are necessary for Steadman Hawkins Injury and Fracture Treatment (S.H.I.F.T.). GHS’ Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas accepts private insurance, Medicare and Medicaid. Co-pays, deductibles or self-pay fees are required at time of visit. If you are seeking a referral to an orthopaedic doctor and are not having an acute problem, please contact your primary care doctor for a referral.
