Cautious global markets Friday, after what has so far been one of the best weekly gains for U.S.
averages in over a year, on reports Ebola reaches NY via infected doctor. Asian stocks rise on positive
Korean, Chinese data, while European markets are modestly lower (positive UK growth data). In
earnings overnight, AMZN disappoints Wall Street, as quarterly results/guidance fall well short of
consensus views, while MSFT shares up post earnings (MANY more earnings results can be seen below).
Treasuries up slightly (have fallen 5 of last 6 days), on the Ebola reports, while gold inches higher, oil
falls and the dollar weakens. Investors also have to think about this weekend’s release of results from
the European Union’s stress tests for banks, as well as next week’s Federal Reserve policy meeting.
Earning still to come today from PG, F, CL, MCO, BMY, UPS, DLPH, and STT
It was another strong session for major averages Thursday, with the S&P 500 Index on pace for its best
week since January 2013, and the NASDAQ on pace as well (up little over 5% this week). Thursday’s
gains were led on stronger European data, easing geopolitical fears, and most importantly earnings,
(Dow Components CAT and MMM accounted for about 90 of the Dow’s 216 point gain yesterday after
better earnings). Industrials, Technology, Energy and Healthcare led markets on Thursday
In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index rose 152 points to 15,291, the Shanghai Index was flat at 2,302, and
the Hang Seng Index dropped 30 points to 23,302
