Costume Design 6 nights London and Bath DAY 1 - US DEPARTURE Morning touchdown in London. We’ll meet our local guide at the airport. Enroute into the centre, enjoy a panoramic London highlights tour during which we’ll see all the major sights of both London’s Old City and vibrant West End. Suitable for those visiting for the first time, or those just wishing to re-acquaint themselves with the Capital’s charms, this tour is London in a nutshell! We’ll drive past such famous sights as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, then along the river to the Tower of London. No interior visits are included in this tour, but photo stops will be made at appropriate points. Tour ends at the hotel for check-in. London is one of the world’s most popular cities. People have flocked to the city for tourism and business alike for over two thousand years. Today London has the greatest concentration of major attractions in Britain, boasts four World Heritage Sites, and is renowned throughout the world for its shops, museums, parks and cosmopolitan life. DAY 2 – THEATRELAND Enjoy a Theatreland Walking Tour on the theme of “100 Years of London Theatre”. Trace theatreland’s history from Edwardian Music Hall and Suffragette Drama via revues, musicals, theatre clubs and battles with the censor to subsidy and the fringe. Learn about personalities who have shaped theatre in the past 100 years from Charles Wyndham and Herbert Beerbohm Tree to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh. This afternoon we visit the warehouse of Angels, the Costumiers. Angels has been dressing the entertainment industry for nearly 170 years. They own the largest collection of costumes and accessories anywhere in the world. Eight miles of hanging costume, all of which are available for productions large and small, from epic to art-house. Tonight attend a performance at one of London’s famous West End theatres. All itineraries custom designed to suit your budget & curriculum. The intensity and nature of the seminars can be adjusted as required. DAY 3 – SOUTH BANK Morning visit to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre on London’s South Bank. Tour the magnificent reconstruction of this 16th century theatre and enjoy a theatrical workshop on a subject of your Tonight we will attend a performance at one of London’s famous West End theatres. DAY 4 – BATH Enjoy a full day excursion to Bath by train. We catch the train from Paddington Station and the journey time is about 90 minutes. Bath is one of England’s most beautiful, elegant and historic cities, and is classed as a World Heritage City. The Roman’s were captivated by the area of Bath over 2,000 years ago, when Bath was a vast green valley with a miraculous stream of endless hot water. More recently, Bath became a fashionable health resort in the eighteenth century and today the remains of the Roman Baths and graceful Georgian architecture combine to make Bath one of Britain’s most popular attractions. For centuries Bath has been a centre of fashion, attracting visitors to its spa and social diversions. The Assembly Rooms is one of Bath’s finest Georgian buildings and is still central to the city?s social life. Very appropriately it also houses the Fashion Museum and its internationally renowned collection of fashionable dress. We enjoy a guided tour by one of the Museum Guides, and a collection of items from a pre-selected period, with sketching materials, can be made available for closer inspection and study. In Bath, enjoy a visit to the Roman Baths. Perhaps the best preserved Roman religious spa from the ancient world, there are four main features: The Sacred Spring, The Roman Temple, The Roman Bath House and finds from Roman Bath. We’ll also see the Georgian Pump Room. Late afternoon return to London by train. DAY 5 – NATIONAL THEATRE Today we concentrate on the National Theatre’s costume department, and the Victoria and Albert Museum Theatre Collection. An NT tour takes you behind-the scenes to see three auditoriums, front-of-house, scenic workshops and backstage areas, all in the company of wellinformed, enthusiastic guides. A visit to their costume department is included. The Victoria and Albert Museum’s Theatre Collections hold the UK’s national collection of material about live performance in the UK since Shakespeare’s day, covering drama, dance, musical theatre, circus, music hall, rock and pop, and other forms of live entertainment. Theatre and Performance galleries dedicated to the performing arts, display works of art, costumes, ephemera, video recordings, puppets, posters and photographs. Our tour will focus on the costume section. Tonight we will attend a performance at one of London’s famous West End theatres. DAY 6 – INDEPENDENT STUDY Full day at leisure for independent study. You may wish to visit the Museum of London, which has a large costume collection. They have on display costume and accessories associated with the theatre and performing arts from the late 18th century to 1970. This includes material related to the theatre, music hall, opera, ballet, circus, cabaret and television. The costume collection is complemented by holdings of related material in the social and working history, photograph and printed ephemera collections and the library. Other technical visits available include costumiers such as The Costume Studio, Academy Costumes or for a change of pace, visit Flints a theatrical chandlers and absolute heaven for stage managers, prop makers and production managers! DAY 7 – BATH This morning an executive motorocoach is provided for transfer from the hotel to Heathrow airport. We will be met at our hotel by a local guide who will escort us to Heathrow and assist us with check-in for our flight arriving home later the same day.
