COPING SKILLS
T h i s y e a r t h e Banana Splits p r o g r a m at t h e e l e m e n t a r y
school f o c u s e d on coping skills. What are coping skills? They are
ideas t h a t can really help w h e n y o u are going t h r o u g h a t o u g h
t i m e in y o u r life. These c o p i n g skills were w r i t t e n for kids, b u t
t h e y really work for anyone of any age.
* Take g o o d care of yourself.
* Keep safe.
* Find someone t o talk w i t h . (Someone y o u t r u s t . )
* Do well in school.
* Learn a b o u t t h e problem.
Keep y o u r f r i e n d s .
Stay busy and active.
Have some f u n .
Try t o be happy anyway.
Try t o feel g o o d about yourself.
A n d remember. Try t o make smart choices t h a t will help y o u r
life go b e t t e r in spite of your problems.
BANANA SPLITS PROGRAM
I h a v e n ' t w r i t t e n about Banana Splits in q u i t e a while. The
p r o g r a m has b e c o m e v e r y popular w i t h p a r e n t s , t e a c h e r s , and
s t u d e n t s . Some y e a r s as many as one h u n d r e d c h i l d r e n h a v e
p a r t i c i p a t e d in t h e Banana Splits p r o g r a m . Here's a l i t t l e m o r e
about i t :
*Family c h a n g e s due t o s e p a r a t i o n , d i v o r c e , d e a t h or remarriage
can be s t r e s s f u l e v e n t s f o r c h i l d r e n . When f a m i l i e s c h a n g e ,
c h i l d r e n e x p e r i e n c e a w i d e r a n g e of s o m e t i m e s
confusing
e m o t i o n s t h a t can a f f e c t t h e i r behavior and school p e r f o r m a n c e .
Being a part of Banana Splits can help.
* Banana S p l i t s is a s c h o o l - b a s e d , peer s u p p o r t p r o g r a m t h a t
h e l p s c h i l d r e n e x p l o r e , e x p r e s s , and b e t t e r u n d e r s t a n d t h e i r
f e e l i n g s . T h r o u g h g r o u p d i s c u s s i o n s and p l a n n e d a c t i v i t i e s ,
c h i l d r e n r e a l i z e t h e y are n o t alone. O t h e r s have f a c e d a n d
learned t o cope w i t h similar s i t u a t i o n s .
* In Banana Splits c h i l d r e n do art p r o j e c t s , play g a m e s , t a l k ,
eat, and share feelings about t h e changes t h a t have happened in
t h e i r f a m i l i e s . A t t e n d a n c e at m e e t i n g s is always v o l u n t a r y so
t h a t Banana Splits remains a " w a n t t o " group, not a " h a v e t o "
g r o u p . Each year we c e l e b r a t e t h e end of t h e p r o g r a m w i t h a
banana s p l i t p a r t y - - e v e r y o n e ' s f a v o r i t e a c t i v i t y !
* Banana Splits g r o u p s m e e t by grade level several t i m e s each
m o n t h d u r i n g lunch t i m e , b e g i n n i n g in O c t o b e r and e n d i n g in
May. All g r o u p s are led by Mrs. M i c h e l f e l d e r , LPES S c h o o l
Counselor.
* Banana Splits is open t o children who live in a family t h a t has
e x p e r i e n c e d c h a n g e due t o a parental s e p a r a t i o n , a d i v o r c e , a
new m a r r i a g e , t h e d e a t h of a parent, or t h e family has always
been a s i n g l e - p a r e n t f a m i l y .
* Each year, t h e Banana Splits program comes t o an end in May,
b u t many children elect t o j o i n again in t h e fall The p r o g r a m is
t h e r e for c h i l d r e n , and c h i l d r e n may p a r t i c i p a t e as many y e a r s
as t h e y f i n d it helpful.
