From Our President
Hello Conference Attendees,
Welcome to the Wisconsin Family Child Care Association's 36th Annual Conference at the Chula Vista
Wisconsin Dells, WI. I'm so happy that you have chosen to attend our conference.
We are offering some wonderful educational and networking opportunities for all child care
professionals. Our theme this year is “Kids at Play the Healthy Way.” As family child care providers
we have the opportunity to play with children all day. We all want what is best for our little ones and
well, playing: we can do it the healthy way. As a provider in Wisconsin we all do our part to provide
quality care in Wisconsin.
Our board members have put many volunteer hours into organizing and preparing for our conference
to make it the best possible experience for you. We listen to your requests, so I encourage you to
talk to myself and members of the board and to fill out the evaluation form and turn it in. If you want
a certain workshop, presenter or keynote to return. Or even if you have suggestions to make it an
experience that participants will remember, please share them with us. If you see anyone that is
wearing a red or polo with the WFCCA logo on it, they are Board Members who can help with any
questions you may have.
Make sure to check out the exhibits and resources. We
have many exhibitors who travel from afar to be with you
the whole weekend. Visit the resource booths too, they
have a lot of great information that can help you move on
with your career in child care.
If you see me at the conference please stop by and say
hello. I am very interested in what you have to say. Thank
you for your continued support of Wisconsin Family Child
Care Association.
Warmest Regards,
Celeste Swoboda, WFCCA President
Supporting Family Child
Care Since 1982
The Wisconsin Family Child Care Association, WFCCA, is a statewide
organization of Family Child Care providers and their supporters, formed to
provide support, involvement, and communication with others in the
profession.
2
A Note from WFCCA
Wisconsin Family Child Care Association is a non-profit organization that has been in existence since
1980.
Our goal is to improve the quality of child care in the state of Wisconsin through conferences,
workshops, meetings, and involvement in the community.
The all-volunteer Board of Directors is made up of regulated family child care providers,
representatives of other organizations, and other stakeholders.
The purpose of this conference is to inform and educate child care providers. By educating providers
we are increasing the quality of child care in Wisconsin. Employees who have quality child care for
their children are often more productive, less likely to miss time from work, and are more inclined to
stay with their current employer.
Children enrolled in high quality early childhood programs tend to be more successful in school, more
competent socially and emotionally, and show higher verbal and intellectual development during
early childhood than children who are not enrolled in quality programs.
It is our hope that you will join us in making the 2017 Wisconsin Family Child Care Association
Conference a success!

C o n f e re nc e Pl a n n i n g T ips
Here are some tips to help you plan your day and make the most of your time at the
conference from veteran attendees…
Figure out the layout of the conference center and locate the registration booth, conference committee
members, WFCCA Board Members, and the hotel registration desk. This will help you get directions quickly.
While your workshop attendance will be reported to The Registry by Wisconsin Family Child Care, labels for
each workshop will also be provided for your own records. Space for these labels is provided on the back of
your conference certificate of appreciation on page 22.
There is very little time in the workshop to explore the presenter’s background or skills. Sometimes you
may feel that you know as much or more than they do. Remember the presenter is sharing from their
perspective and sometimes that can bring you a new idea on yours. We hope there will be time for all
participants to share their ideas at the end of each workshop.
Meet new people and make new friends while you’re here. Lunch is a great time to meet new people.
There will be many people eager to talk with you, so don’t be shy. Everyone always comments that the
chance to meet and share with other providers is one of their best experiences of the conference. Visit with
the exhibitors, introduce yourself to others at the conference, find a new contact and have an informal
sharing session. Business cards are excellent to have on you at all times!!!
If you are staying at the hotel: Check-in time is: 4:00pm and Check-out time is 10:30am
The Conference Committee welcomes your suggestions and observations when something needs to be
corrected to help things go more smoothly for you.
DISCLAIMER ~ each person has the right to their
own views and opinions; therefore, WFCCA
cannot be held responsible for opinions that do
not agree with yours or misinformation from a
presenter.
DISCLAIMER ~ WFCCA cannot be held
accountable for inconveniences caused by the
Chula Vista.
We do our best to keep the
individual workshop rooms at a comfortable
temperature for everyone, however sometimes it
can be difficult to regulate. We recommend that
you dress in layers so you are able to adjust
accordingly.
This book is your guide to the Conference; please
make yourself familiar with it.
Most importantly, enjoy yourself and have fun!

WFCCA 36th Annual Conference Keynotes
Denita Dinger
“Embracing Play”
Friday – Room I
More and more, play has been replaced with teacher-directed learning. We
no longer trust play as a child’s work. This keynote will not only define
what play actually is, it will inspire the participants to embrace the learning
power that is organically found in play. Through her 18 years of working
with young children, Denita has learned that teaching isn’t so much about
showing and doing as it is about stepping back, observing and supporting
the current interests of children. This keynote will give participants a new
appreciation for play and a fresh perspective on the value of child-led play.
Through the sharing of simple ideas for setting the environment for
successful play-based, child-centered learning, the roles of the adult in
child-centered play will be CLEARLY defined. Participants will leave this
session refreshed, energized and feeling empowered with valuable tools
that will help them embrace play.
Denita Dinger is a defender of the joyful and valuable learning that occurs in child-led play. She is
passionate about bringing that joy to all early childhood programs, and helping others see play for what it
truly is: the BEST way for a young child to build the foundation for a life-time of learning. Denita is all
about building a foundation for LIFE, not just getting kids in the doors of Kindergarten.
After 17 years as a family child care provider, Denita made a slight career change in 2014 and opened
Kaleidoscope Play School. Her BS in Elementary and Early Childhood Education come in handy to help
parents (and anyone who will listen) have age-appropriate expectations in this world where worksheets
and other rote-methods of learning are replacing developmentally appropriate practice.
Dr. Diane Craft
“Active Play! Fun Physical Activities for
Young Children”
Saturday – Upper
Dells Ballroom
Learn fun, inclusive, developmentally appropriate physical activities that
can be played in small spaces including apartment living rooms and
playrooms. These physical activities use only readily available, inexpensive
equipment to give children many opportunities to explore moderate to
vigorous movement in safe ways. Lead these activities to encourage
children 18 months to 5 years of age to develop their fundamental
movement skills and fitness as well as rehearse varied academic concepts.
This keynote is designed for family child care providers seeking practical,
motivating, fun ways to promote physical activity among toddlers and
preschoolers. View videos of young children playing these fun activities
and try a few, too!
Diane H. Craft, Ph.D., is a professor of physical education at SUNY Cortland. She has co-authored four
books on developmentally appropriate, inclusive physical activity for young children
including Active Play! Fun Physical Activities for Young Children. In addition, Dr. Craft
has given over 200 highly-acclaimed presentations, workshops and keynotes on
preschool physical activities to audiences across the nation. She is currently
consulting with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention as a subject matter
expert on early childhood physical activity.
*Special Thanks to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Race
to the Top- Early Learning Challenge Grant, for sponsoring Dr. Craft.

Jason Rahn, Inclusion Policy Analyst DECE/BELP - YoungStar
An overview of laws and policies behind Inclusion and most importantly how they can guide your child care
program in your journey to high quality inclusive care.
ROOM F
Protect the Kids by Protecting Yourself
Diane McHugh - Immunization Coordinator, Public Health-Madison and Dane County
Everyone knows that children need immunizations to stay healthy, but as caregivers to children, adults also
need to be immunized to protect themselves AND the children in their care. Although there are no
requirements in Wisconsin for providers to be immunized, CDC and Public Health-Madison and Dane
County have recommended immunizations for adults, to stay healthy and help the children too. Find out
what’s recommended and why.
ROOM G
Classroom Design
Karen Narlow - Master Instructor, 4C for Children
Classrooms serve as the physical environment for adults and young children. Although it is important for
classrooms to be attractive to the eye, it is equally if not more important, that the classroom is functional.
You will learn ways to organize your space to help engage children more in free play. In doing so, the
children will exhibit greater self-reliance and may help them to develop longer attention spans.
ROOM H
Power to the Profession
Laura Simkin - WECA Membership Services Coordinator, Wisconsin Early Childhood Association
Moving Early Childhood Education forward as a professional field of practice will take all of our voices, most
importantly the voices of those who do this critical work. “Power to the Profession” is an initiative of the
National Association of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)—along with 14 other national
organizations—to establish a shared framework of career pathways, knowledge and competencies,
qualifications, standards and compensation that unifies the entire profession. WECA staff is eager to
facilitate a conversation; bring with you what tugs on your heartstrings or what keeps you up at night.
Let’s talk!
ROOM I (Double Session)
Let Them Play
Denita Dinger - Defender of Play: Owner and Operator of Kaleidoscope Play School and Camp Empower;
Owner and Operator of Play Counts Consulting; Author
Sadly, many programs can’t “just” let children play. Early childhood professionals must PROVE learning is
occurring in their programs. This workshop is all about proving the value of play (dissecting play) and how
to document that value.
Through group discussions and sharing, participants will practice articulating the learning that is occurring
during play, and, more importantly WHY that learning is so important for a young child’s future academia.
Developmentally appropriate practice will be at the forefront of this workshop, in addition, participants will
explore roughly 30 stations where they can play, dissect and take LOADS of ideas back to their programs.
