How a planer converted to Plano milling. A) Mounting Plano milling head in the existing tool post of planner. B) By providing an auxiliary table feed unit in the existing drive system of the planner. If the planner does not have slow table speeds, suitable for Plano milling mode. Selection of a milling head. Milling head are available. In 5HP, 10HP, and 20HP capacity depending upon the size of the planning machine, suitable for maximum Dia 160mm, Dia 310mm and Dia 450mm cutters respectively. Most of the machines on 16feet stroke suitable for 5HP milling head , imported and Indian planer machines like Cooper, HES, Hercules, Champions etc are suitable for 10HP and 20HP capacity. Intermediate Back Plate. An intermediate Back plate is fixed between the milling and tool post carriage, taking location of the valuable and circular “T” slot of the carriage Graduated collar will guide to positioning of the spindle access +/- 45degree. The back plate guide easy tilting mechanism of the milling head and also leads the full utilization of the available quill movement of the milling head. It is difficult to support the unbalanced weight of the desired angle. Hence a mechanical tilting mechanism consists of a worm and a sector gear is provided to the back plate. Table Feed and Cross Feed Control System There are 2 types of Table drive control system are available 1. Mechanical Table control system. Consists of 3HP Electrical motor and two numbers of Nisson Automobile gear boxes. It provides 25 stepped table speeds in planomilling mode ranged from 30mm per minute to 600mm per minutes. The output of the table drive unit is connected to the main drive shaft of the planning through a chain and sprocket mechanism. The table drive unit will be supplied complete with Motor. Bracketories, chain guard, speed chart etc. 2. Electrical table feed and cross feed control system. Consists of a worm reduction gear box, motor and frequency converter, control panel and pendent. The table to move from 30mm per minute to 400mm per minute in step less range in planomilling mode. The unit is complete with all require cables. Output fittings, chain and sprocket etc. Required controls for For/Rev/Stop Rapid/Stop selectors for table feed and similar start/stop and for/rev selector for spindle motor will be provided. The Spindle RPM and table feed rate will be adjustable easily using the potentiometer provided on the pendent of the machine. Also calibrated voltmeters giving the spindle and table feed rate will be provided on the pendent. Controls for selection of planner Plano- milling mode will also be provided. All necessary interlocks and required sensors / limit switches etc will provide. This include interlocks by operation of planner motor only when clutch of Plano-milling is positively disengaged, Table stroke limits, Spindle rotation-table feed interlocks etc. Complete required cabling material like cables, hoses, connector’s etc. for cabling from panel to pendent, motors, limit switches, clutch etc., need to be provided i) AC Motor and Gear box assembly. This will have an AC induction motor of reputed make fitted with an external axial fan for forced conversion. This helps in proper heat dissipation, during motor running continuously at all RPMs. The Motor will drive the input shaft of a reduction gear box. For this a slip frees suitable timer belt drive. Reduction gear box will be of reputed make like Elecon /Radicon/Cyclo etc. ii) Controls. Complete control system for the planomilling operations will need table provided. The controls will include controls for spindle and table feed and necessary inter locks. All the required controls will be housed in a separate electrical cabinet placed on floor near to the place where reduction drive unit is fixed. All the elements used like MCBs, contactors, cables etc. for the control system will be of standard reputed makes easily available in India like Siemens/L&T/Technic/Indo kopp etc
