Classes in a location of your choice. We have a collection of laptops, iPads, tablet computers, and an Internet hotspot that can be used
for classes in community centers, churches, senior residences, etc.

Classes in other JCPL libraries. We have a collection of laptops, iPads, and Android tablet computers that can be used for classes in any
of the JCPL libraries.
Mobile Computer Classroom. The MCC has 8 laptop workstations with Internet access and an overhead display for the instructor’s
demonstrations. We can teach all of our classes in the vehicle. Any non-profit group (or group of 4 or more individuals) in Jefferson
County can arrange for classes in the MCC. The MCC is not wheelchair accessible and there is very limited floor space for walkers. Patrons
who require regular assistance from a caregiver may not be left unattended in the MCC during classes.

Mastering the Mouse
Never touched a computer? This
class is for you. Practice clicking, doubleclicking, and dragging. Introduction to
drop down menus, checkboxes, radio
buttons, scrolling, and cut-and-paste.
Mastery of these skills is essential for
all other computer classes.
Computer Basics
Decided it’s time to learn something
about computers? This class will show
you how to use a mouse and keyboard,
the parts of the computer, and the
basics of navigating in Microsoft
Windows. This will prepare you for our
Internet, email, and Microsoft Office
classes. Prerequisite: Mastering the
Mouse is helpful, but not required.
Internet Basics
Learn to use a web browser, to access
websites, and find information on
the Internet. Prerequisites: Mastery
of the mouse and some keyboarding
experience.
Online Searching
Learn search techniques beyond just
“Googling,” and explore other online
sources (the “deep” or “invisible” web &
databases) to find the information you
really need. Prerequisites: Mastery of the
mouse, moderate keyboard skills, and
prior experience using the Internet.
Email: Attachments, Folders,
Distribution Lists & More
Get your email messages under control
by organizing them in folders. Practice
opening attachments and adding them
to your own messages. Learn how to add
people to your contacts lists and create
groups to make sending messages more
efficient. Learn to create signature blocks
and to forward email. Prerequisite:
Mastery of basic email functions.
Google Calendar
Learn to use online calendars to organize
your schedule with multiple calendars,
events, appointments, and reminders.
Prerequisites: Mastery of the mouse and
keyboard, your own Google or Outlook
account or equivalent.
File Management and the
Windows Desktop
Do you have hundreds (thousands?) of
files on your computer and too many
things on your computer desktop? Do
you have to spend time searching for
files before you can start doing any work?
This class will show you how to get
things organized on your computer:
creating a filing system for your
documents and putting your most
used apps where you can quickly get
to them. Prerequisites: Mastery of basic
computer skills (mouse, keyboard).

Learn the basics of different versions of
Windows (separate classes for each): the
Start Screen/Menu, Charms, File Explorer,
keyboard shortcuts, displaying multiple
applications, customizing the desktop,
etc. Prerequisites: Mastery of basic

Tablet Computer Basics
Explore your iPad or Galaxy (Android)
with us: physical features, the multi-touch
screen, the home screen, and some of
the most frequently used apps, such as
the camera, notes, Internet browsers,
mail and reminders. Separate classes for
iPad and Android tablets. Bring your own
tablet or use ours.
Microsoft Office Products
Word: Basics
Learn and practice the fundamentals
of creating text documents: entering,
editing, formatting, and moving text;
opening and saving document files.
Prerequisite: Mastery of basic computer
skills.
Word: Special Topics
Classes devoted to advanced formatting,
tables, graphics, and collaborative
editing. Prerequisite: Mastery of features
covered in Word Basics.
Excel: Basics
Learn and practice the fundamentals
of setting up and using spreadsheets:
entering, editing, and formatting data,
and creating, editing, and using basic
mathematical functions and formulas.
Prerequisite: Mastery of basic computer
skills.
Excel: Special Topics
Classes devoted to conditional
formatting, charts graphs and tables,
formulas and functions, macros, and
pivot tables. Prerequisite: Mastery of
features covered in Excel Basics.
PowerPoint: Basics
Learn and practice the fundamentals
of creating a slideshow: using text
and pictures to create, edit, and save
a presentation. Prerequisites: Mastery

Publisher Basics
Learn and practice the fundamentals
of creating a publication: combining
text and graphics to create a newsletter,
brochure, calendar, etc. Prerequisites:
Mastery of basic computer skills,
moderate word processing skills.
Outlook: Email and Calendars
Learn to use Outlook to manage your
email and use its calendar to keep track
of appointments, meetings, events, etc.
Prerequisites: Some familiarity with
basic email functions.
Information Resources
Check the calendar for classes on
finding information on specific topics:
health, law, genealogy, government
resources, etc. We also offer a class
on getting the most out of what the
library offers: ebooks, downloadable
videos, borrowing materials from all
over the country, reliable authoritative
information resources, free passes
to museums and parks, delivery of
books and videos to the homebound,
free meeting rooms, and so on.

Windows commands and functions);
