Literacy
Mathematics
Letters and Sounds – Phase 3 and Phase 4.
Linking sounds to letters. Blending and
segmenting with letters. Reading and spelling
CVC and CVCC words. Learning to read more
‘tricky’ words. Naming and ordering letters of
the alphabet. Using phonic knowledge to write
simple words. Begin to independently write simple
sentences that can be read by others.
Using mathematical language time and
capacity. Reading o’clock times.
Measure short periods of time in simple
ways. Sequencing and ordering familiar
events. Solve problems involving adding. Add
two single digit numbers by counting on.
Solving problems involving subtraction, by
counting back (number rhymes).
Physical Development
Move confidently in a range of ways
to take part in circle games.
Show an understanding of the need
for safety when taking part in
activities off school premises.
Use a pencil and hold it effectively
to form recognisable letters.
Retracing vertical lines and using
anticlockwise movement when
writing letters. Begin to accurately
sit letters on lines.

Communication & Language
Listening games and activities to continue to
embed Phonics Phase 1.
Daily stories and songs.
Circle time – listen and give attention to what
others say, respond appropriately showing an
awareness of the listeners needs. Listen
attentively, ask relevant questions and make
relevant comments.
Using language to imagine and recreate roles.
Learn and perform a ‘tongue twister’. Use a
range of vocabulary in imaginative ways to
express ideas – what could Humpty see?
Understanding the World
“Rhyme time”
Personal, Social & Emotional Development
Demonstrate an understanding of ‘respect’ for others, the
environment, resources, families, living creatures and themselves
(self respect).
Increase confidence to speak and share ideas in group situations.
Understand and demonstrate expected behaviour in different
situations. Take changes in routine in their stride (trip to
Shrewsbury). Understand that others may identify different
qualities in people and to respect their views.
At Forest School know how to show respect for living creatures
and the environment.
Expressive Arts & Design
Represent own ideas through art (painting a
person they respect).
Using colours for particular purposes when
designing cards (Mothering Sunday/Easter).
Making up own versions of familiar nursery
rhymes.
Daily singing to build up repertoire of rhymes
from around the world.
Rhymes about the weather.
Rhymes from different cultures
and countries. Weekly cooking
activities. Using ipad and/or
digital camera to record peers
reciting rhymes. Older KS2
pupils to edit to make a class
video. Investigating floating and
sinking (Incy, Wincey Spider/
Row, Row, Row Your Boat).
Finding out how to build the
strongest wall (humpty Dumpty).
Investigating eggs (Humpty
Dumpty) Spring festivals –
Shrove Tuesday, St David’s Day,
St Patrick’s Day, Mothering
Sunday, Easter.
Initial outline planning which will be extended/adapted through observation of
children’s play and interests.
