history - City of Glasgow College

DIVERSE CITY
BLACK
HISTORY
MONTH 2015
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
October is Black History Month in the College and in Scotland. Glasgow is the most
multicultural region in Scotland, with people from a diverse range of nationalities,
ethnicities and religions calling the city home. Black History Month has been
celebrated in Scotland since 2001 and continues to be a vibrant, fun and informative
series of events in Glasgow and Scotland.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
In spite of Glasgow’s rich multicultural heritage, the experiences of African,
Caribbean and Asian people have been largely absent from our history books. Black
History Month provides an opportunity to commemorate the contributions, sacrifices
and achievements made by Glasgow’s diverse communities, and to educate
ourselves about Scotland’s past, and use this to build upon our future.
WHAT’S GOING ON?
City of Glasgow College will be marking Black History Month with a series of events
and activities with which both staff and students are encouraged to get involved.

FILM SCREENINGS
The College’s Students’ Association will be showing a number of films for Black
History Month, exploring the theme of Black representation in sport. The screenings
are free to attend and will run at 5pm throughout the last week of October in
Townhead and Riverside association spaces.
ALI - Tuesday 27th October, 5pm at Townhead SA
Muhammad Ali not only took the boxing world by storm as one of the greatest
heavyweights the sport has ever seen, but he was also a vocal opponent of racial
injustice and an important black icon. ‘Ali’ explores his life, from his childhood in
Kentucky to his boxing success.
INVICTUS - Wednesday 28th October, 5pm at Riverside SA
In his first term as the South African President, Nelson Mandela initiated a unique
venture to unite the apartheid-torn land: enlist the national rugby team on a mission
to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup. ‘Invictus’ tells their story.
42 - Thursday 29th October, 5pm at Townhead SA
Until the late 1940s, players of Black African descent were excluded from Major
League Baseball. ‘42’ tells the story of Jackie Robinson who ended segregation in
the sport when he became the first African American to play at Major League level.
