Programmer – Families and Schools
SALARY RANGE:
£24,000-£28,000 (pro rata), P/T (28 hours per week)

REPORTING TO:
a) Head of Community Programming
b) Programme Director
ANNUAL LEAVE:
20 days plus statutory and Jewish holidays (pro rata)
Working as part of JW3’s Programming Team, and reporting directly to the Director of Programming and the
Head of Community Programming, you will work together to JW3’s Director of Programming, programming
staff and teachers/presenters/performers, in order to help fulfil JW3’s Vision and Mission.
MAIN PURPOSES OF ROLE:
In conjunction with the head of community programming, to be responsible for developing and delivering the
JW3 family and schools programming strategy. The role includes:
 Devising and implementing a diverse and dynamic year round program for a wide range of families and
schools.

Developing relationships with key professionals in schools with an aim to offer their students opportunities
to gain new skills and confidence through a wide range of sessions and workshops hosted at JW3 or the
schools themselves.

Providing families with high quality programming; reflecting key Jewish festivals and national events where
appropriate.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
1. Development, Management and Delivery of Programme – Families (approx. 16 hours a week)

Plan and deliver a year-round, diverse, full programme of events and activities aimed specifically at
families. These may range from Family Fun Sundays, family activities aimed primarily at children with
parental accompaniment, inter-generational activities and projects aimed at the whole family; high quality
family arts events including music and theatre events; Jewish festival celebrations and other opportunities.
All events to be in the context of the overall programme that reflect the Centre’s vision, values and
ambition as a Jewish Community Centre.

Be present at key/flagship events and activities including presenting and facilitating where appropriate,
including on occasion, outside of JW3’s premises

Manage any freelance staff and volunteers who are involved with delivering any JW3 Families programmes
and activities.

Work with the Head of Community Programming, the other Programme Heads and relevant lay
Programming Committees, continually to develop JW3’s programming vision, and ensure appropriate and
effective articulation of this vision both internally and to the wider community.

Be an active part of the Community Programming team in terms of its responsibility for inputting to the
development and implementation of the Community Programming Strategy.

Ensure that thought is given to integrating people with physical and/or learning disabilities into our
activities and/or to developing specific activities and events suitable for disabled people.

Ensure that activities, and those delivering them, are reported on, monitored and evaluated effectively.

Ensure that all family activities are planned and delivered in a timely fashion and within budget, maximising
the Centre’s resources.

Risk assess activities and events and ensure that they comply with any relevant JW3 policies, e.g.
safeguarding, health and safety etc
2. Development, Management and Delivery of Programme – Schools (approx. 12 hours a week)

Be the first point of contact/liaison for all work with schools

Develop relationships with schools, especially Jewish schools and local non-Jewish schools, both primary
and secondary, including getting their agreement to distribute our families and youth marketing and
brochures wherever possible.

Look to develop a small number of specific projects with appropriate schools that bring in students,
especially those aged 13-17, to JW3.

Organise occasional one-off workshops and sessions, whether at a school or, where space permits, at JW3
that further the mission and/or contributes to the financial health of the budget.

Manage any volunteers or external facilitators/educators etc that are brought in to work on or deliver any
JW3 Schools projects or activities.
3. Liaison with JW3 Colleagues

Programming Team: work collaboratively as part of the wider Programming Team and the specific
Community Programming team, including being involved in a number of organisational wide festivals and
special events.

Work closely with all of the relevant staff and departments that are involved in delivering programmes and
events and provide them with all necessary information needed in a timely fashion. This includes the
Building Manager, Housekeeping, Security, Zest, the Finance Department, the Marketing team, the Head of
Box Office and the Head of Production.
4. Promoting and Representing JW3

Protect and enhance the reputation of JW3, presenting the organisation in an appropriate and professional
manner to stakeholders.

Act as an advocate for the impact of JW3’s work where appropriate.
5. Programme Partners and Providers

Work with existing partner organisations, implementing and managing all relevant partnership agreements.

Identify and develop appropriate new programme partnerships and agreements, both in terms of the
family programming sector and in terms of schools, both Jewish and non-Jewish.

Manage the relationships with existing individual ‘programme providers’ (e.g. speakers, performers, artists,
teachers, etc). and identify new programme providers to be included in future programming.
6. Financial Management/Budgets

Produce and manage budgets for all your activities and events in a timely fashion, including tracking the
actual income and expenditure and producing financial event reports after events are completed

Negotiate financial arrangements with Partners and Providers, as appropriate and within the guidelines set
by the Programming Director, and ensure they work to those agreed financial parameters.

Where possible, identify opportunities for external programme funding and work with the Director of
Programming and Director of Development to attract external funding to the programme.
7. Audience Development and Engagement

Work with the wider programming team to build appropriate relationships with our audiences in general
and with our families and schools audiences in particular.

Promote the JW3 programme to our existing and potential audiences and seek to grow their loyalty and
affiliation.

Support the Programme Heads, the Director of Programming and the marketing team in devising
approaches to seeking out new audiences.
8. Other Responsibilities

Be an active part of the Community Programming team, attending all team meetings

Attend all other relevant staff meetings, supervisions, etc.

Act as an ambassador/point of contact in the JW3 office – answering the telephone, welcoming guests as
needed.

Undertake other reasonable duties as required by your line manager or member of the Senior Staff Team.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
The successful candidate must wholeheartedly buy into JW3’s mission, vision, values and guiding principles.
A belief in the importance of inclusivity and working cross-communally, and a commitment to high quality
Jewish engagement, arts and culture, and community-building is critical.
Essential Skills and Experience
 A good track record of delivering family programming, ideally in a community or youth organisation (e.g. a
youth centre, community centre, family education provision, etc).

Experience of face-to-face work with families and/or children aged 3-10.

Experience of successfully working under pressure, with multiple demands and in a changing environment.

Track record of successful management of budgets.

Experience of building, developing and maintaining effective relationships with partner organisations and
individual providers (e.g. educators, workshop facilitators, etc).

A commitment to, and understanding of, the needs of the Jewish community and/or Jewish arts and
culture.

Good knowledge and understanding of comparable institutions, programmes or projects that work with
these specific target groups.

Understanding of best practice in the field of family programming and/or informal education in schools.

Effective team-working and collaboration skills - ability to work with team of staff in a collaborative way in
an environment where work is shared in order to meet tight deadlines.

Organisation - high level planning and organising skills in order to produce strategic and operational plans,
and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

IT - high level of competency, including demonstrable effective use of Word, Excel & Outlook.

Empathy and social skills - in order to understand the perspective of others, respond to needs and
expectations and build effective working relationships, eg with partner organisations, programme
providers, colleagues etc.

Influence - effective negotiating, influencing and persuasion skills at an appropriate level.

Communication – excellent verbal and written communications skills. Able to build networks, articulate the
vision and mission of JW3, and excel in communicating with the public, colleagues and stakeholders.

Self-direction - ability to work on own initiative and without direction. Ability to structure own time, use
initiative, prioritise effectively to deliver on the organisations’ key goals.
Desirable

Experience in the area of children and family arts and theatre.

Experience of working in or with schools, especially in terms of programming for schools and informal
education within the school.

Experience of successful community Centres – having been an active, involved member, instructor/teacher,
and/or staff member.

A record of developing and implementing effective strategic plans and working in accordance with the
objectives, timescales and budget of an organisation.

Experience of implementing effective evaluation processes in order to improve projects.

An experience of working with/managing volunteers.

Experience working with children, young people and adults with learning and/or physical disabilities.

and Bank Holidays as required. To serve the needs of a community centre that operates 15 hours per day
for 6-7 days per week, Programmer roles are not 9-5 office roles.
Specifically, this job requires regular Sunday work (which would be treated as a normal working day for this
role), as well as working on average what could be two to three evenings a week, including the Sunday.
