PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE April 2014 EVERY HOLIDAY IN THE JEWISH CALENDAR REPRESENTS A CERTAIN SPIRITUAL ENERGY, PASSOVER RESOUNDS WITH THE ENERGY OF FAITH Dear Congregants, Life is a journey of small steps, and every journey begins with a single step. Many of those steps require great courage and strength. With others, we only need the desire to go forward and enjoy something new. Know that with each step we enter a new experience. So, let us take that step with faith in G-d, belief in ourselves and confidence in the loyalty, conviction and hard work of our friends here at Temple Bet Emet. Ask yourselves the following questions: Do I need to step forward with my family relationships, friendships or in spiritual life? Should I open my heart to new ideas? Is it time for me to look at more creative avenues of self expression? Shall I take a step toward finding new ways to learn and express myself spiritually? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, let us take that step now. With the inspiring thought about the journey of life in mind, be reminiscent that Passover occurs in the month of Nissan. The Torah considers Nissan to be the first month of the Jewish calendar. "It is first for you among the months of the year." (Exodus 12:27) Thus Passover is the first Holiday of the Jewish year. Every Holiday in the Jewish calendar represents a certain spiritual energy mainly potent on that day--a specific opportunity or potential which can be accessed most effectively on each Holiday throughout the cycle of the Jewish year. This year, the first night of Passover begins on April 14th 2014. I am so pleased that our Special Events Chairperson, Nan Birnbaum, has planned another wonderful Seder for our congregation at the Siena Bistro at the Siena Golf Club. I hope that you will take the step and join together with our Temple Bet Emet Family to celebrate Passover with us. We are blessed again this year to have our outstanding Cantor Lola leading our service. As we gather together at the Seder table and retell the story of our liberation, think of the "bread of affliction" in broad terms. Please consider those less fortunate and give them the gift of mitzvoth. Victor and I wish all of our Temple Bet Emet Family a Zissen Pesach. RABBI’S MESSAGE… Rosenstein Rabbi’s Article Nissan / 5774 Happy In this Pesakh this year is a convergence of three interesting notions. One of course is the holiday of Pesakh, in which through the Haggahdah, we read the stirring epic of our exodus from Egypt. On the 7th day of Pesakh, during the morning worship service, we read and chant the song that Miriam and the women sang and danced as they crossed the Red Sea. The slavery in Egypt finally ended and the children of Israel were freed. When the Egyptian oppressors were drowned in the Red Sea, Miriam took out her tambourine. She led the women in a song of gratitude to God. Where did that tambourine come from? Anyone that's ever been to a Passover Seder knows that the Jewish people left Egypt in such a hurry they didn't even have time for their bread to rise. Yet Miriam had time to pack her tambourine? Miriam was prepared early -- not because she was efficient but because she believed, because she knew that the Almighty keeps His promises and looks after His children. She knew that miracles 2 would occur. She knew that Jewish women would dance and sing in praise of the Almighty. She expected to use her tambourine. The second is a recent hit song. Entitled Happy, by rap artist Pharrell Williams, it was part of the summer movie hit, “Despicable Me”, and was nominated for an Oscar as Best Song. The lyrics are fairly simple, and suggesting in different metaphors how one feels when he or she is happy: I'm a hot air balloon that could go to space (Because I'm happy) Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof (Because I'm happy) Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth (Because I'm happy) Clap along if you know what happiness is to you (Because I'm happy) Clap along if you feel like that's what you wanna do Well, I should probably warn ya, I'll be just fine (Yeah!) The lyrics are even more striking when you watch what has become one of the most watched videos on the Internet. The official and original video is that of Williams, and many unnamed people in Los Angeles simply dancing to the lyrics. They are dancing to no recognizable dance steps – they are just grooving to whatever they are thinking about. Some are clearly not even dancing, but are just moving. It doesn’t matter – they are simply “happy!” That has led to many imitations of people all over the world dancing. (If you haven’t see the video, just You Tube Pharrell Williams Happy Official Music Video). The third convergence is that this year is the 30th anniversary of the movie Footloose, and the birth of one of the most memorable movie lines ever; in which the main character, played by Kevin Bacon, in justifying why the local high school should have a school dance, in a town in which the local pastor believes dancing to be a sin, says to the pastor, “sometimes, ya just gotta dance!” A great metaphor for life, “sometimes ya just gotta dance!” That’s what Miriam says to the women of Israel. “God is making good on His promise…We are alive…let’s dance!” Pharrell Williams, through his lyrics and videos of people dancing for the sheer joy of it, is saying the same thing. Kevin Bacon is telling the pastor, that dancing is happiness. That’s the message of Pesakh – at our core, we need to be happy…Dayaynu – it would have been enough. There is no reason to be sad – we have…something. That is enough. We are happy. We need to scrape away the layers to uncover our hidden power and glory, our hidden trust and strength. We need to start banging our tambourines. We need to dance! We need to be happy! IN MEMORIAL Irving Swartz, 92, a long-time member of Temple Bet Emet, passed away peacefully in the care of Hospice with his daughter at his side on March 12 after a lengthy illness. He is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Clara, and is survived by his three children: Jason Swartz of Albuquerque, NM; Myrna Swartz of Los Lunas, NM; and Marsh Rose of Cloverdale, CA. He also leaves many nieces and nephews in the United States and his native Canada. After serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, Irv graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in chemical engineering. His career spanned the burgeoning plastics industry until he retired at age 72 from Polysar /NOVACorps near Boston. Within days of retiring he and his wife had moved to their favorite vacation spot, Las Vegas. Irv’s lifelong passion was photography and one legacy is his collection of thousands of photographs taken since he was a teenager when black and white film was the only option. Irv’s quiet brilliance, talent, love of family, generosity and especially his sense of humor will be sorely missed. He is interred at Palm Mortuary in Las Vegas beside his wife. Congregants who wish to share their memories of Irv are invited to email his daughter Marsh at [email protected]. She will forward the message to family and include it in a memorial CD. 14 15
