Counselor’s 4 Paragraph Written Report Directions: Write a well-developed paragraph for each question below that includes textual evidence whenever possible. You will be evaluated based on the quality of your writing and especially how well your responses reflect a close study and overall understanding of Catcher in the Rye. Use your written responses to these questions to create your power point and 3x5 cards for the additional details that won’t appear on your slides. 1. What will you say to welcome the parents and students who have come to find out about your school? Write this paragraph the same way you would write a speech. TIP: include what TOPICS you are going to cover in your presentation. 2. About YOU: As a counselor, what is the most important thing for prospective students like Holden and their families to know about you, your background, and your beliefs and values about working with and educating young people? Write this paragraph the same way you would write a speech. Use the ideas you came up with on the Create Your Character sheet to help you write this paragraph. 3. Use the body paragraph outline provided to help you complete this paragraph. • What types of services related to career exploration, goal setting and future planning does your school offer that students like Holden would benefit from? Based on what you know about Holden, his personality, interests, and values, what types of careers would you encourage Holden to explore? What might you recommend to support Holden with planning for his future? Include two integrated quotes from the text with context and commentary to support your ideas. 4. Use the body paragraph outline provided to help you complete this paragraph. • What types of counseling services and programs does your school offer that will help students like Holden emotionally? (Be specific. Do not just say counseling. What approaches and techniques does your school find most beneficial for supporting students like Holden?). Include two integrated quotes from the text with context and commentary to support your ideas. Creative Component Together as a team OR individually, plan something that leaves a long lasting, positive impression with students and parents that encourages them to register at your school. You will need to EXPLAIN how your creative component shows what your school is like and evidence from the text that supports your idea. A strong explanation will move beyond superficial or obvious ideas that are explicitly stated in the book and instead consider multiple layers of meaning. Example: A school that offers a culinary program might make cookies to share with your audience in the shapes of important symbols from the text. In your presentation, you would discuss what these symbols represent and, if you had already not done so, why a culinary program would be beneficial to students like Holden. Ideas: poetry, music, visuals, artwork, demonstrations, real life photos, videos, audience participation, skits, performances, audience participation, giveaways, etc.
