April Meeting
Thursday, April 14, 2011
7 PM FGMS Auditorium
Speaker: Walt Lombardo
“Diamond Occurrences in North America”
Diamonds are found in a variety of rock types and from a wide range of
geologic ages. In a relatively short time, Canada has become one of the
world’s leading diamond producers. Several diamond-bearing pipes are
known in the United States, and more are suspected. This talk will cover
the geology of the diamond host rocks, indicator geology, areas of known
diamond fields, and areas of future potential (including California). Besides
Walt’s program we’ll also have Greg Anderson giving us details on the
upcoming San Diego County Fair’s Gem and Mineral exhibit. We hope to see
you on the 14th!
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER
Walt Lombardo is a geologist/mineralogist with 30 years experience working
within the mining industry. For sixteen years he managed the Southern
Nevada office of the Nevada Division of Minerals, a state agency which
oversees the state’s mining, oil, gas, and geothermal industries. He has also
worked as geologist for American Borate Company (Death Valley), Cyprus
Gold (California Mother Lode), Eagle Hill Exploration (Arizona uranium),
and Desert Research Institute in Las Vegas. Most recently he was Manager
of North American Exploration for War Eagle Mining Company where he
coordinated germanium and gallium exploration projects in Indiana, Illinois,
Kentucky and the Czech Republic.
Walt owns Nevada Mineral & Book
Company located at 342 S. Tustin Street, Orange, CA 92866 (in Eldorado
Plaza).

President’s Message
Last Friday we had a couple of rockhounds from Montana who came
to Fallbrook to visit our Gem & Mineral Museum after reading about us in
the January/February issue of the Rocks & Minerals publication. They were
impressed with our museum and gave us a very nice donation. It’s good
to know that we are getting recognized for our hard work and our museum
collection.
And, thanks again to Michael, Mary, Jim and Mark for putting
together that great article in Rocks & Minerals!
Vanessa

Garth’s World
Over the many years I’ve related many of my mining
adventures in my ‘Garth’s World’ articles in the
Lithosphere. This month I have put together an index of
those articles for those who would like to look up some that
they may have missed. From 2005 through the present
most of those articles can be accessed via our new
Garth Bricker,
website (www.fgms.org) on the internet. After accessing
FGMS Member
the website, navigate via the ‘Meetings & Newsletters’
and
header to the year and month for the Lithosphere that
will contain the Garth’s World adventure that you want to
Museum Curator
see. For a few Lithospheres that couldn’t be linked via our
website, you can find hardcopies available in the FGMS office. I’ll try to add
to this index in a future issue.
