Rural Address Handout

Minnehaha County requires that every home or business establishment within the
unincorporated area of the county display an address sign. The Rural Address
Ordinance regulates both the design and the placement of the sign. Failure to
display or removal of the sign is punishable as a Class 2 misdemeanor.
The sign should be placed on the right
hand side of the driveway as you stand in
the road and face your house. If there are
obstacles the sign may be placed on the
left side of the driveway.
The post shall be placed in the ground
between 0 and 30 feet from the edge of
your driveway and within 1.5 feet of the
right-of-way line or fence line. The face
of the sign should be perpendicular to the

The post should be driven into the ground
at least 2.5 feet. It is your responsibility to
call S.D. One Call for utility locations (Dial
