Dear Parent/Guardian,
We all know how important reading is in the education of our children so the Scotland PTO has decided to pay the fee
for Scotland School to represent us at the Prairie Readers completion. Prairie Readers is sponsored by the Women in
Action group of Armour. The completion will be held in Armour on March 19, 2013. We will be participating in the 2nd12th grade competitions. During the competition the students compete with other schools to answer questions about
the books they have read. The competition is comprised of two timed rounds of questions that they are scored on.
Trophies will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place teams and medals for the 3rd place team. The school with the most
accumulated points will receive a trophy to keep and a traveling plaque, which returns to the next year’s competition.
Your child will be responsible to read 10 predetermined chapter books chosen by the Women in Action group. The
books are from a variety of genres. There will be a few copies of each book for the children to use, but you may need to
purchase the books on your own. Each team is also required to write questions for each book to be used during the
competition. We need to ensure that your child reads each book in a timely manner. You may read the books with your
child.
Each group will need to arrange a time to meet after school with parent volunteers to prepare for the competition.
During this time the groups will discuss the books and prepare and practice questions. If you are willing to be a parent
volunteer please let your child’s classroom teacher know by October 1, 2012.
Please sign and return to bottom portion of this paper if you would like your child to represent Scotland School in this
event.
Thank you,
Scotland School PTO and Staff

Please take time to double check authors of books. We have had schools read the wrong
book because of books with the same name but different author’s.
Year notation in parenthesis is the year(s) this book was used previously.
