Foreword
This South African standard was approved by National Committee SABS/TC 081/SC 01,
Construction materials, products and test methods ‒ Cement, lime and concrete, in accordance with
procedures of the SABS Standards Division, in compliance with annex 3 of the WTO/TBT
agreement.
This document was approved for publication in December 2015.
SANS 3001 consists of various parts under the general title Civil engineering test methods.
Parts CO3 of the SANS 3001 series contain methods for the testing of concrete in structures.
Annex A is for information only.
Introduction
This document has been prepared to provide instructions on how to test the chloride conductivity of
concrete disc specimens that have been previously prepared using the method given in
SANS 3001-CO3-1. A purpose-built conduction cell and electrical circuitry are used for the test, with
multimeters for taking measurements during the test. The test describes the oven-drying and
vacuum saturation procedure needed for the specimen conditioning stage.
This document gives guidance on calculating the test parameters.

Civil engineering test methods
Part CO3-3:
Concrete durability index testing — Chloride conductivity test
1 Scope
This part of SANS 3001 describes the method to test for chloride conductivity on concrete
specimens that have been prepared by coring and cutting concrete cubes in the laboratory, or by
taking cores from concrete elements on site.

The following referenced document is indispensable for the application of this document. For dated
references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the
referenced document (including any amendments) applies. Information on currently valid national
and international standards can be obtained from the SABS Standards Division.
SANS 3001-CO3-1, Civil engineering test methods – Part CO3-1: Concrete durability index
testing – Preparation of test specimens.
3 Preparation of specimens
Prepare four specimens in accordance with SANS 3001-CO3-1.
4 Apparatus
4.1 Oven, capable of maintaining a temperature of (50 ± 2) °C.
NOTE If the oven being used is of the closed (unventilated) type, the relative humidity inside the oven should
be maintained by the inclusion of trays of saturated calcium chloride solution. The trays should provide a total

exposed area of at least 1 m /1 m of volume of the oven and should contain sufficient solid calcium chloride to
show above the surface of the solution throughout.
4.2 Vacuum saturation facility (see figure 1).
4.3 Conduction cell (see figure 2), with anode and cathode permanently marked on the outside of
the cell, and with flexible rubber collars free of cracks or tears.
NOTE Two designs of the conduction cell are available (see figures 2(a) and (b)).
