INTEGRATED ACTIVITY
Think about the following:
- What is matter?
- Matter is composed of three things, what are they?
- What is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes known as?
Take a moment to think about what matter is and how matter can be classified.
Today you are going to create a map about the classification of matter by its
state. You are going to create a concept map which explains the three groups
of matter and give brief information on each group.
Task: Create a concept map where you present 3 groups of matter
using the drawing toolbar in MS Word. You must give an example on
each group.
Remember to classify matter by its state, not by its composition for these are 2
different things.
1.
Open the Microsoft Word programme either by clicking on the Microsoft
Word icon on the desktop or clicking Start  New Office Document 
Blank Document

Save your document into your digital portfolio  Office Button  save as
 locate your portfolio  double click  type a suitable name in the file
name box  save

Type Matter, your initials and class in the filename box at the bottom of the
dialogue box

Click on the Insert tab  Shapes icon and select one of the flow chart or
basic shapes options

Select a shape which will be able to display text.

Click on the shape and move your mouse arrow onto the page

Draw the required size box on your page
8.
Position this box at the top of your page in the
centre
9.
Right click on the box while the edit handles are
still visible and click on edit/add text to be able to
type text inside the box

Type “Classification of Matter” inside the box
11.
Format your heading by highlighting it (
click at start of sentences and drag over
words until they are all highlighted)

Change the font by selecting the home
toolbar  size (32 in image)  style (Calibri in
image) colour of the text (A with the red line
beneath it in image).

Double click back on the box to display the edit
handles
14.
Should you wish to apply a shadow or 3D
style to the text box, click on the Shadow
Effects or the 3D Effects icons and select a
suitable style from either when the drop down box appears.

Insert 3 boxes below the main
heading box. Select a different shape
from the shapes drop down box
16.
Enter and format text in the boxes in
the same way as you did for the main
heading.

Use the headings: „Solids‟, „Liquids‟
and „Gases‟

Format the boxes in the same way you did the main heading box should you
wish to

Use the arrow drawing tool from the shapes drop down box to insert
arrows between the main heading and the 3 sub headings

Click on the arrow icon and draw the arrow in the required position.
Click on the arrow to display the edit handles should you wish to move it or
change the length of the line.

Move the mouse over the line until an arrow appears. Hold the mouse button
down and drag the line to the required length

Insert appropriate graphics under each text box by clicking on Insert
toolbar  Clip Art. Type a suitable word in the search bar to locate a
picture

click on the required picture to insert

You can also use the saved pictures. Click on Pix Linx  right click on
the selected picture  copy  return to your document  right click
 paste.

Position the picture under the
text box.

Resize the picture by clicking
once on the picture and clicking
on the edit handles and
dragging

Insert one or two pictures
under each sub heading

Insert a third level of boxes
under the pictures which will
display what your plan of action
is for each of the sub headings

Use the shapes drawing tool on the insert toolbar in the same way as
before

Position the boxes under the pictures you have inserted

Inside these boxes type one or two sentences or phrases which explains what
each group of matter is all about.
33.
Format the text in the same way as you did the text in the main and sub
headings

Insert arrows from the sub headings to the bottom text boxes
to link them
35.
Print your work.
