Would I need a precise measurement or an estimate for the following? Ask yourself: Is it okay if I'm a little off? Would it be okay if I was off a little bit when I'm cutting up a paper for an art project? Would it be okay if I'm a little off when finding a distance between two cities? Oct 304:32 PM

6.2 Customary Units of Length
Oct 304:34 PM
Customary Length Conversions/Relations
Length measures how long something is.
Use the eraser to reveal the tools used to measure length.
12 inches (in.) = 1 foot (ft.)
3 ft. = 1 yard (yd.)
36 in. = 1 yd.
5,280 ft. = 1 mile (mi.)

Steps to Convert From One Unit to Another
Click the buttons on the side to see instructions.
Decide: Are you going from a smaller unit to a larger unit of
measurement or from a larger unit to a smaller one?
Make the motions with your arms
to help you. What signs do these
arms look like?
If you are going from small to big, you have to divide. If you are
going from big to small, you have to multiply.
Ask yourself: What is the relationship between the two units?
For example, there are 3 feet in 1 yard.
Take the number that you began with, the correct operation, and
the conversion factor and compute these numbers.
