Composing and Decomposing Planning and Assessment Roadmap
Kindergarten - Unit 7 (K.NBT.1, K.G.5-6)
Common Core State Standards Assessed in This Unit: K.NBT.1, K.5-6
Big Idea/Over-Arching Concept:
Exploring numbers and shapes
Post Assessment –
Do not continue
planning until every member of the team takes the district
assessment for this unit.
Enduring Understanding(s):
Teen numbers are composed of a group of ten and some more.
Basic shapes are used to create more complex shapes.
Pre-Assessment – (same as post, if needed)
Guiding Questions (2-5):
How are teen numbers composed and decomposed?
How is mathematical language used to describe shapes?
Where do we see shapes in the world around us?
Date created/revised: 3/25/15
Mathematical Practices:
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Identify the Mathematical Practices that will be emphasized in this unit.

WIDA Standards
English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic
success in the content area of Mathematics.
English language learners would benefit from:
● The teacher modeling how to fill two ten frames using manipulatives to compose and
decompose numbers from 11 to 19.
● Students will repeatedly practice using a double ten frame and manipulatives to show that
teen numbers are composed of tens and ones.
● Students will verbalize the number of tens and the number of ones for a given teen
number. i.e. The number 18 is made up of 1 ten and 8 ones.
