Last month’s issue included a wide range of information and articles; from a valiant bow & arrow wielding resident who thwarted a thief to memories of a soon-to-be superstar rock band that practiced in the Woods in the 1970’s and then tips on preparing for an earthquake. As you know, we’re an all volunteer organization that relies upon help from you, the reader. We’re not asking for money (that’s a refreshing change!), we need news of your celebrations, milestones, world travels, professional achievements, happenings on your street, funny stories, living history of Chapman Woods, interesting articles, classifieds, etc. . . Often, just a few sentences from you are all we’re looking to include. However, if you would like to write more, we would welcome your contribution. We’re striving to keep this newsletter vital and reflect the range of what’s happening in Chapman Woods. We need your help. On a more immediate news front: lately, I’ve seen a few dogs running around the community without their owners nearby and I’ve received some anxious phone messages from Chapman Woods residents about their lost pets. Luckily, through word-of-mouth and calls to neighbors the dogs were returned to their homes. To facilitate the news of our lost or found pets, I’m putting together an email group that will immediately reach everyone on the list. Sending one email will inform everyone on the list about our area’s lost or found dogs. Let me know if you would like to be included. Let me know you’re a dog lover and send it to [email protected]. With the cooling weather and the falling leaves we begin the season of festive entertaining. The Giannottas are hosting this year’s Martini Party on October 10th in their beautiful backyard. You can choose from a standard gin or vodka martini, try one of the fun specialty drinks we’re planning or have a glass of wine. The creatively delicious food is being catered again this year by Terry Madigan. No need to bring anything except your desire for a fun afternoon of food and drink. You’ll see me there—I’ve been the bartender for this event for the past three years! The Rosemead Project (How are you coping with the traffic?) by GABI SACKS As the Rosemead project continues on, your Chapman Woods Board and Kohl’s Committee Representatives would like your feedback in order to let the County know how we are dealing with the traffic and congestion. For example, since some streets have been designated “closed” due to construction, has the traffic decreased on your street or increased on your street? How about the noise level during the construction? Please let us know as soon as you can. They commemorated the occasion this summer by taking a PAUL GAUGUIN cruise to the Society Islands in Tahiti. The cruise was the trip of a lifetime—with crystal-clear warm water for snorkeling, spectacular food and perfect weather. Each island was different and incredibly beautiful. Page 5 First Time Back Since 1951! by MICHAEL RUSZCZYNSKI During a recent open house at 3320 Thorndale, SUSAN STONE REY greeted PATRICIA WICKERSHAM NEWTON who returned to tour the house she lived in as a young girl. Mrs. Newton lived in the house from 1944-1951. She enjoyed walking through each room telling interesting tidbits and stories to us and her daughter, KAREN NEWTON. She described the landscaping of the front and back yards and the beautiful view they had of the grass baseball field behind Willard Elementary School (now an asphalt parking lot). I particularly enjoyed hearing about the construction of the house next door—which happens to be my house, built in 1946! Coyotes in Chapman Woods Animal owners please beware of the coyotes that wander down from the hills into our neighborhood. They may look like mangy dogs, but they are actually wild animals that can be dangerous, especially to our pets. One of our neighbors west of Madre recently lost her dog to a coyote. Please try to keep your animals inside if you can. Do not have pet food or water dishes outside the house—the food attracts both harmless and troubling critters. Please let us know if you see the coyotes or have had any problems. Whom to Call . . . Today the organization serves some 11,000 clients in the greater San Gabriel Valley area including Pasadena, Glendale, and Burbank. For many years CAS ran a thrift shop to support itself and needs of its clients. In the late 1990’s CAS received a large financial gift from the estate of a prominent Pasadena resident. The Foothill Boulevard property was purchased that could adequately house a client service center and provide storage space for the thousands of pieces of equipment to be loaned. Through grant monies a truck was purchased for pick-up and deliveries of larger pieces of medical equipment. Michael P. October 2010 Memories of the House We Built in 1947 by SHEILA CROWDER I am a longtime resident of Chapman Woods and wish to share some of the things I remember from years gone by. As a young married couple, my husband, ED CROWDER, and I bought a lot at 3560 Mountain View Avenue with a wonderful view of the San Gabriel Mountains. The year was 1947 and this lot had been a victory garden CHAPMAN WOODS CALL be in our new home finally in June of 1948. However, in February 1949 we had a big snowstorm and all of our new plants were frozen! Wilson and Willard Schools were just blocks away and, at that time, the Rose Parade Floats were on display on the Wilson playground. As you can imagine, we had many visitors on our street. As time went on, we had two children, JEFF and CINDY, who grew up enjoying Chapman Woods and attending the schools nearby. Our front yard was the neighborhood baseball diamond and our living room a place for board games for all of the children in the area. Good times were had by all. It was difficult to leave the home we built, raised our family, and lived in for more than 60 years because Chapman Woods is such a wonderful place to live. One of the big events of the year was the summer barbecue at the Boys Club behind Willard Elementary. Many of the residents of Chapman Woods attended. I am now residing in Baywood Court in Castro Valley, California to be close to my daughter. My son lives fairly close in Sacramento. The delightful evening began at the home of HARRY and SANDY CAMPBELL. While engaging in conversation and exquisite appetizers, neighbors were entertained by the LACHSA Combo (soon to play at Monterey Jazz Festival). The next stop was the home of PETER HUGHES. Along with his girlfriend, ROBERTA PAPE, they wowed everyone by serving a traditional Philippine roasted pig (applein-mouth and all) with delicious chutneys and accompanying side dishes. The happy neighbors wined and dined. As time marched on, so did the group. As a finale, they landed at the home of BOB and LORETTA HOFFMAN for swimming (mainly the kids), a fire pit, desserts, more beverages, and lots of very lively chatter. We are proud at Post Alarm to say the third generation is now involved with their daughter GINA and son ROBERT. Post is one of the oldest businesses in the Pasadena area that has maintained the same ownership since the day we opened. We do this by providing our own installation, service, monitoring and patrol, which allows us the ability to maintain quality and excellent customer service. SAM POST, back when he was a police sergeant and a colleague We believe a patrol service should be individualized, not stamped from a mold and sold as if “one size fits all.” We pride ourselves in taking the time to get to know your unique needs and expectations. Then we design a service that matches those requirements. Unlike many of the companies out there, we will also be there years down the line to provide the same consistent, reliable service you have come to expect. A personal message from BILL POST: “I would like to personally invite you to come to our main office, tour our monitoring facility and meet our personnel. Jesús Arellano began experiencing a familiar sensation. Burning, like indigestion, turned to chest and back pain. He began to sweat. Having had a heart attack three years earlier, Jesús immediately recognized the symptoms. A local emergency room confirmed his suspicions. Within minutes, Jesús was being transferred by ambulance to Methodist Hospital. As a county-designated STEMI receiving center, Methodist Hospital has the equipment, trained staff and proven track record to provide the fastest possible care for heart attack patients.
