Telfer Gold Mine FOC Install
In 2006, Dunstans Construction Group was
contracted by Silcar Communications to lay 350km
of Fibre Optic Cable (FOC) for telecommunications
from Telfer to Pardoo Roadhouse.
Due to the successful completion of numerous FOC installations for
Silcar, we were allocated further contracts for similar projects, which
saw the team move through South Australia into Western Australia
over a period of two years.
Telfer Mine to Pardoo Roadhouse is our largest FOC contract to
date – installing 350km of FOC through remote locations in the
far north of Western Australia.
Much of the installation was through the Great Sandy Desert,
in a remote region of Western Australia. This project included
traversing approximately 15 sand dunes. The 24-man crew lived
in camps set up along the installation route.
Dunstans participated in a state initiative aimed at upskilling the
local Aboriginal population, and subsequently employed two local
Indigenous workers as part of our crew.

Our team utilised a specially designed zero tension plough
mounted on a D7 Bulldozer. Pre-ripping was undertaken with a
D9 Bulldozer. All equipment used in the construction of the FOC,
was owned and maintained by Dunstans.
Despite the challenges of working in such a remote location,
Dunstans delivered this project on time, on budget and with no
time lost due to injury.
