You want to make a 5 gallon mixture that contains 3 times more iced tea than
lemonade by volume.
1. Write a system of equations that represents the situation.
2. How many gallons of each do you need to make?
3. The labels show directions on how to make iced tea and lemonade using
scoops of powder mix. Rather than making each separately, you add scoops
of each to 5 gallons of water. How many scoops of each do you need?

Score
1. Sample answer: Let x be the number of gallons of iced tea and let
y be the number of gallons of lemonade.
x = 3y
2
x+ y = 5
2. 3.75 gallons of iced tea and 1.25 gallons of lemonade
