District Industrial Profile of Siddharthnagar
1. General Characteristics of the District
Siddharthnagar district is one of the 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh state in Northern India.
Naugarh town is the district headquarters. Siddharth Nagar district is a part of Basti division,
it was created on December 29, 1989. The district was named Gautam Buddha childhood
name Siddartha . Siddharthnagar district encompasses the village of Piprahwa (22 km
from Naugarh), best known for its archaeological site. A large stupa and the ruins of several
monasteries are located within the site at Piprahwa. Ancient residential complexes and
shrines were uncovered at the adjacent mound of Ganwaria. Some scholars have suggested
that modern-day Piprahwa-Ganwaria was the site of the ancient city of Kapilavastu, the
capital of the Shakya kingdom, where Siddhartha Gautama spent the first 29 years of his life,
according to Buddhist texts such as the Pāli Canon. Others suggest that the original site of
Kapilavastu is located 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) to the northwest, at Tilaurakot, in what is
currently Kapilvastu District in Nepal.
Siddharthnagar is adjacent to Nepal. To its east is the district of Maharajganj, to the south
Basti and Sant Kabir Nagar, and in the west Balrampur district. Total population of the
district as per 2011 census is 2,557,740. Out of the total population around 16% of the
population belongs to the scheduled castes & Muslims constitutes around 29% of the
population. According to the Government of India, the district Siddharthnagar is one of the
Minority concentrated District in India. It is a Category ‘A’ district that is it has socioeconomic & basic amenties parameters below the national average.
1.1 Location, Map & Geographical Area.
The Siddhartnagar district lies between 270 N to 270 28’ N and 820 45’ E to 83010’ E.
It is part of Purvanchal Uttar Pardesh. The district borders Nepal’s Kapilvastu district on
the north and Rupandehi on the northeast. Otherwise it is surrounded by other districts of
Uttar Pradesh Maharajganj on the east, Basti and Sant Kabir Nagar on the south, and
Balrampur on the west .The total geographical area of the district Siddharthnagar is
2,895 Sq. Km .

1.2 Topography
The district located adjacent Nepal & footfills of Himalaya , known as Trai area. Most of
land are fertile and the main crops rice, wheat, Sarson & potato , Kalanamak variety of rice very
popular . The District agriculture depends with rain water and weather; most of season gets
good weather & rain water.
1.3 Connectivity
This district is connected with Railway Link as well as Road links . There are 09 Railway
stations well connected with state and national capital. Road Networks in the district is good
frequently buses are available to New Delhi and major cities of Uttar Pradesh. Nearest domestic
Air Port in Gorakhpur which is about 80 KM from the district Head Quarters and nearest
international Airport in Lucknow which is about 250 KM from the District Head Quarters.
1.4 Availability of Minerals.
No major mineral deposit is available in the district. Only silica sand is collected from the river
banks. As given in the following table, 294232 tonnes sand was produced during the
year 2010-11.

The forest cover area is 3708 hectare which accounts for only 0.78% of total district area.

Administrative set up
Siddharth Nagar District headquarter is Naugarh, for administrative purpose the
district has been divided in to 5 tehsils , 14 Block and 1 Panchayt Samities . There
are 152 revenue villages and 999 Gram Panchyat and 2334 inhabited villages and 171
are uninhabited.

- Growth trend of Sidharthnagar indicates that various mini rice
mills are established during last 3 years due to scope of export of rice in nearby countries .
Some of the old rice mills are technically upgraded. Apart from Manufacturing Sector there is
large growth of service enterprises in this district like Restaurants, Cyber cafe, Transport
Agencies, Automobile repair shop, guest house, mobile shops.
