SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY COMMITTEE
MEETING MINUTES
WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 2013
I.
Present/Student member
The meeting came to order at 1:34 PM. The following faculty attended: Sandra
Carter, Sherie Coelho, Mark Hunter, Heather Hutcheson, and Jason Newman. It was
announced that Brenda On, student member, was appointed to the SRC by Winnie
Lanier. Sandra would contact Winnie to confirm the appointment.
II.
Minutes
The minutes were approved with a correction made to the date of the Sharefair
which will take place from Nov 18-22.
III.
Web Site Update/Concerns
Sandra talked with Winnie Lanier. A concern that was raised was how a new
member of the committee was placed on the website before Anastasia had an
opportunity to update it. Who has access to the SRC website? A suggestion was
made to approach the academic senate to determine how something like this could
happen. If the SRC’s website can be accessed then any committee’s website could
be accessed.
IV.
ONE Book/SRC film support
Maureen apologized for not putting the SRC on the ONE Book announcements.
Funds came from Ginny McReynolds for posters of SRC support of One Book.
V.
White Privilege film series (List of resources)
1
Renowned speaker Tim Wise recently spoke at Sac State. Anastasia asked if we
were going to have white privilege or privilege as our theme for our film series.
Jason volunteered to take the lead on white privilege. Heather stated that the film
Living for 32 was sent to her by Rubina Gulati. Nymbeku George has also sent books
and films about race to the committee. The committee is still searching for
resources for its own film series to start in the spring semester 2014, which will be
independent from ONE BOOK. The committee is looking to find enough resources to
have 4 or 5 film showings under this theme. A Sandy Hook remembrance at the end
of the semester was suggested and warmly received by the committee. Potential
dates would be December 10-12. It was suggested that connecting this with Winnie
Lanier would be good for students. Sandra was going to reach out to Rubina and
thank her for thinking of us regarding the movie Living for 32.
VI.
Safe Space Update
Sandra talked with Steven regarding the safe space update. Steven will be the point
person on this project working along with Celia, Kathy, and Debbie. It may be on
hold until Anastasia gets back, but Steven will ask.
VII.
Share Fair Update
Heather presented the committee with a flyer regarding Sharefair. She stated that
things are coming along well. Steven stated that he can get the sustainability
committee to help out with this year’s event. Richard Pan will be coming out to the
Sharefair this year. Heather stated that several groups will be
attending/volunteering to help with Sharefair. Lauren Wagner has offered to do
PSA’s with her students. Heather mentioned that it would be nice to have classes
attend the panels that will be on Wednesday. Anastasia will place a copy of the
Sharefair flyer on the website. The flyer will contain a list of all groups who
participate in the event. It was mentioned that the Sacramento Food Bank is invited,
but never seems to participate.
VIII. Move to Amend – David Cobb speaking event
Sandra will be making flyers to promote David Cobb. David is scheduled to make his
presentation at CRC on November 12th. The recital hall has been booked from 9-3
for David on this date. The flyers that will be used to promote his presentation will
be ready by October 15th. David has agreed to speak twice (same talk) during the
time allotted. The question was how to organize the talk so that we can maximize
the number of students that may attend. Concern was that not many students may
attend after 12:00. David will be in the Sacramento area from Nov 10-12 engaging in
2
several different events in preparation for his talk at CRC on the 12 th. Sandra has
heard David speak and he is very versatile for different audiences. Sandra will
arrange to have his talks videotaped.
IX. SRC Funding Sources
Funds have been secured through Ginny Mcreynolds, Dean of
Humanities, for all SRC Projects so far. Ken Cooper was mentioned as
a possible source for future funding as well.
X.
Film: Inequality for All: Robert Reich
It was encouraged that we should attend the showing of the film,
Inequality for All- By Robert Reich at the Tower Theater on October 4,
2013. It was suggested that Eddie Fagan sponsor the showing of this
film
XI. Other Issues
Anastasia may be able to join the next meeting via Skype. The media
department will be contacted in order to help accomplish this.
XII. Next Meeting
The meeting adjourned at 2:34 PM. The next meeting will be on
October 9th @ 1:30 PM in the SOC conference room or also via Skype.

IX.
Tim Wise Film Series for Sp. 2013
The discussion continued about the title of the ‘privilege’ series. Sandra wanted to maintain the word

time, that is the temporary title until a satisfactory title is arrived at.
The time frame for the film series will include February through May.

III.
Living for 32 Wrap Up
Approximately ten to eleven people attended this event which included students, faculty, administration
and district police. The forty minute movie was followed by a discussion amongst the group. Some
suggestions included having online training. The student perspective taken was excellent regarding the
questions posed. This was considered a good start in the spirit of educating all constituents about
emergency events on our campus.
IV.
Shooting Preparedness Event
A discussion was started about having a round table, possibly at flex day that focuses on how emergency
services operate at CRC. Some of us were not aware that we are supposed to contact campus police
before calling 911 in the event of an emergency on campus. Perhaps the SRC should take a leadership
role in educating the faculty regarding emergency events on campus. We could organize a break-out
session at flex to accommodate all interested faculty and invite district police to participate.
V.
Safe Space Update
Steven communicated with Kathy McLain regarding the Safe Spaces Update. She made some changes to
the forms and will contact Celia Esposito-Noy to get things back on track. Positive progress has been
made on the Safe Spaces program. Steven has been the point person on this project while Anastasia has
been on sabbatical during the fall semester. Great job Steven! Anastasia is expected to return to work
on this when she returns in the spring.
VI.
Spring 2014 Meeting Times/Place
A spring meeting time has not been determined at this point. Some members can meet in the
afternoon, while some members can only meet in the morning. Sandra will continue to identify a time
where most members schedule can be accommodated for spring meetings.
VII.
Spring: Day of Silence
th
April 24 is the day of Silence. The concept of the Day of Silence is to highlight awareness with the Gay
and Lesbian community. Everybody is encouraged to participate in some capacity. Some members will
be bringing food for the participants in the morning.
11
VIII. Spring: Earth Day
Steven, along with the SRC, is working to obtain a speaker or presenter on GMO’s. The
speaker’s name is Marika.
IX. Spring: Film Series: What is Privilege and Who has it?
The SRC has decided to host its own film series entitled Privilege. The
committee will begin by showing material from Tim Wise who speaks
about the privileges he has being a white Male. The film series will look
to explore privilege along several lines such as class, culture, and gender.
Sandra will be looking to gather material related to the theme of this
film series. Please forward any material you may have regarding this
theme to Sandra. This film series hopes to encourage conversation on
the topic of privilege.
X.
Spring: Speaker Event
Sandra is trying to ascertain a speaker from the organization Earth
Justice, who has a lists of speakers. Sandra is also trying to arrange a
speaker on Anti-Fracking. It would be a good idea to connect a speaker
with a theme from Earth Day.
XI. Other Topics
Mark will consider bringing a speaker to campus to speak on the topic
of profiling.
XII. Meeting Adjourned
The meeting adjourned at 2:45 PM. Sandra will contact members about
the time and place of the next meeting during the spring semester.
Have a great Holiday Break!

MEETING MINUTES
WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 12, 2014
I.
Present
Sandra Carter, Steven Coughran, Mark Hunter, Jason Newman, Tam Phan, Anastasia
Panagakos
II.
Minutes
Minutes approved as amended
III.
Student Volunteers
Sandra introduced Tam Phan, a student volunteer. She also mentioned that another
student, Rosemary Lopez, wants to participate on the committee. She had suggested that
the committee address the topic of drunk-driving among young people.
IV.
Film Series
The committee discussed the logistics of the first showing of the film in the privilege series.
It was suggested that an evaluation form be created to be distributed at the showings.
Sandra volunteered to do it. The committee also discussed some of the campus responses
the committee received from faculty about the appropriateness of the topic. It was decided
that the committee will wait to provide a full committee response to the particular
complaints. Otherwise, Sandra has responded to the individual in question and will wait to
see if a full committee response is needed.
V.
Day of Silence (Date Change)
There will be a food fair on April 24th consequently the Day of Silence has been moved to
Wednesday April 9th. The silence is broken at 1:30 PM. Several members of the committee
have volunteered to bring breakfast items for this event.
VI.
Speaker Event
Sandra has found a speaker. David Shimabukuro, an instructor from CSUS, has expressed an
interest in speaking to our campus community. There was a concern that his talk may be
too technical. Contacting Geologists on our campus regarding Anti-Fracking as well as
showing the movie Gasland was offered as a potential secondary option .
VII.
Safe Spaces
Anastasia updated the committee on the work regarding the safe spaces project. The forms
are ready to be put on the website, but neither Kathy McLain nor Celia Esposito-Noy has
been in contact with Anastasia. Perhaps the administration is not really comfortable with
this program. One question that was raised was is the administration going to help with this
effort.
13
VIII. Earth Day
The SRC will have a table at this year’s Earth day with representatives
from the anti-GMO organizations.
IX. Union Report
Negotiations have begun, and the LRCFT is meeting actively with the
district’s negotiators. Jason stated that he has received more calls in the
first three weeks than he ever has before. Employee morale is low
because of lack of a meaningful COLA, increase of accreditation work,
confusion surrounding FTE allocation, problems regarding pre-requisites,
course caps, and the general lack of transparency in the current
administration.
X.
Other Topics
Mark was considering bringing a speaker to campus to discuss the
topic of profiling. This will be tabled for the current time.
XI. Meeting Adjourned
The next meeting will be February 26 @ 1:30 PM. Sandra will contact
the committee with the meeting place.
