MPSSP Termly Newsletter Northumberland Step into Sport Conference 10 leaders from Ponteland High School and 9 Leaders from KEVI attended the Northumberland Step into Sport Conference at the new Ashington Leisure Centre. The conference brought together Northumberland’s best young leaders from both mainstream and special schools. Following the conference the leaders will have the opportunity to complete a leadership qualification in either Sitting Volleyball or Boccia. They will then be able to use these skills when helping with the Northumberland Para Games on Tuesday 26th April. Leaders were inspired by 3 Sports stars on the day: Tamara Taylor is an English female rugby union player who captained England in the 2015 Women’s Six Nations Championship. Christian Roberts who is a Welsh former professional footballer. Alicia Armstrong a 14 year old swimmer who after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in 2012 received a lifesaving bone marrow transplant, which has allowed her to get back in the pool. She won an astonishing 5 gold medals and 2 silver medals in the World Transplant Games in Argentina. Fabulous Girls Cricket in Northumberland Congratulations to KEVI and Ponteland Middle School who were crowned Northumberland Lady Taverners Champions at the Under 15 and Under 13 Cricket Tournaments. Both teams will go on to represent Northumberland at Old Trafford. U13 on 26th April and U15 on 27th April. 2016 Year 4 Gymnastics 10 teams participated in the Year 4 Gymnastics Level 2 competition at Northern Gymnastics Cramlington. Pupils had to perform 2 sequences to be judged, but also had an opportunity to work with the Northern coaches in the specialist facility. Congratulations to all teams who demonstrated an exceptional standard of performance. In a very close contest Belsay were 3rd place and Darras Hall were 2nd . Huge congratulations go to Abbeyfields First School who were the winners and will therefore go on to represent the partnership at the Northumberland School Games. Year 5 and 6 Gymnastics Richard Coates, Ponteland, Chantry and Newminster Middle Schools took part in a Year 5 and 6 Gymnastic competition. Squads consisted of 4 students who each had to perform their own choreographed routine. Within each routine students had to demonstrate 6 skills to include one roll, one jump and one balance. An exceptionally high standard was demonstrated. Ponteland Middle were runners up, whilst Richard Coates Middle were the overall winners. Congratulations to all participants. The best performance by a girl was Olivia from Richard Coates and Jacob from Newminster. Year 7 and 8 Volleyball The Year 7/8 Boys and Girls Volleyball level 2 competition was once again held at Ponteland Middle School. 2 boys and 2 girl’s teams competed in a highly fought competition. Congratulations to Ponteland Middle School, their boys and girls teams and will go forward to represent the partnership at the Northumberland School Games. Follow us on twitter @MorpethPontSSP Year 4 Multi Sports Festival A fantastic 240 students from Morpeth and 180 students from Ponteland participated in the Year 4 Multi Sports Festival. The aim of the festival was to assist with transition to middle school, especially for some schools whereby the shear walk to Chantry was a lesson in transition itself! Students enjoyed a taster session in Boccia, a Paralympic sport, and the sports of Basketball, Hockey and Netball in order to develop their skills prior to the uptake of these sports at middle school. Year 4 Leadership Training During the last week in December Mr Dimmick and Miss Simpson trained more than 100 Year 4 students to become the Schools Sports Organising Crews (SSOC) in their respective schools. Students were taught a range of leadership/sports specific skills in or- der to enable students to lead and coach younger pupils during lunch times or within curriculum time. Please encourage your SSOC to use their Leadership Log and of course promote the Values of the School Games: Honesty, Respect, Passion, Determination, Teamwork and Self Belief. Year 8 Boys Basketball Year 8 Badminton Both of the middle schools from Morpeth and Ponteland competed in the level 2 boys’ basketball competition. Congratulations go to Ponteland Middle School whom dominated the competition by scoring 27 points and winning all of their games. They will now represent the partnership at the Northumberland School Games. Ponteland Middle school Boys and Girls won the Ponteland Badminton competition. Meanwhile in the Morpeth competition Chantry Girls and Newminster Boys were the winners. We look forward to a fabulous play off contest in which the overall Boys and Girls winners will represent the partnership at the Northumberland School Games. YST Young Coaches Academy 30 Students from KEVI had a great opportunity to enhance their coaching and leadership skills with an exciting training day at St James Park on Wednesday 20th January. Following on from the day students will be able to develop their skills by coaching at a local sports club. Additional opportunities will ensure young coaches are nurtured and developed in order to create great future coaches in Northumberland. Staff CPD Dates: 12th April Netball High 5 Workshop 14pm Chantry Regional Sportshall Athletics Partnership schools excelled in the Regional Sportshall Athletics Competition. Congratulations to all those students that participated and to the following teams for there outstanding overall performance: Ponteland Middle School Year 6—County Winners Newminster Middle Boys Year 7—County Winners Newminster Middle Girls Year 8—County 2nd Chantry Middle Girls Year 7—County 3rd 18th April PE Coordinators CPD Module 6 9.15—3.30pm Pegswood Year 4 Tennis Year 6 Leadership: 6th June Newminster Middle 8th June Chantry Middle 9th June Richard Coates Middle In the last week of the Spring 1 Term the Partnership held their Year 4 Tennis Competition. Teams consisted of 4 boys and 4 girls. Teams played all other teams in their pool and of course also had the chance to demonstrate their ability in a skills circuit. Well done to all teams for participating, particular congratulations go to Darras Hall First and Morpeth First who won their respective areas, therefore needing to compete in a play off at a later date. The overall winner of this will represent the partnership at the Northumberland School Games.
