2017 Wilderness Trail Crew Leader
The 2017 Wilderness Trail Crew Leader will work in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness Area and the surrounding
wildlands on the Nez-Perce-Clearwater National Forest, in North Central Idaho. The position will start in early
May and end in October, approximately 26 weeks. The Wilderness Trail Crew Leader will lead 2 Wilderness Trail
Crew members, and be responsible for performing annual and deferred maintenance in the Selway-Bitterroot
Wilderness. The Leader will report directly to the SBFC Programs Director and work closely with Nez-PerceClearwater National Forest wilderness managers. The Wilderness Trail Crew may spend up to three weeks at a time
in the wilderness and the Wilderness Trail Crew Leader should have the experience required to manage crew
members, all logistics and planning for trail projects for extended stays in the wilderness.
Duties
The Wilderness Trail Crew Leader will be responsible for a range of wilderness trail and monitoring tasks. Duties
include:
 Supervising two wilderness trail crew
 Assisting SBFC with staff and intern training
 Leading volunteer trips
members
 Coordinating pack support for trail projects
 Leading trail projects to accomplish annual
 Coordinating tools & logistics for trail work
and deferred maintenance
 Following Forest Service safety and
 Completing and submitting hitch reports on a
operational protocols
bi-weekly basis
 Maintaining accurate data on a variety of trail
 Coordinating all projects and logistics with US
metrics
Forest Service managers and with SBFC

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Candidates must have the following:
• Wilderness trail maintenance, reconstruction, stewardship, and traditional tool use skills
• Wilderness trail crew supervision and leadership experience
• Wilderness travel skills, including experience with backpacking and pack stock
• Excellent communication skills—verbal and written
• Experience with extended wilderness travel, backpacking, and Leave No Trace
• Experience working with and leading volunteers
• Ability to maintain positive attitude and work through crew dynamics in a remote setting
• An understanding of the Wilderness Act, the US Forest Service and nonprofits is desirable.
Additional Requirements
Personal characteristics
 Must be self-directed, highly motivated, reliable, professional, and organized. Must be committed to public
land stewardship and wilderness, volunteerism and service and have strong interpersonal skills. Must be able
to work both independently with minimal supervision and cooperatively as a member of the SBFC team.
Physical requirements
 Must be capable of performing heavy physical labor, such as carrying a 50+ pound backpack plus tools
associated with duties (e.g. shovel, saw, etc.), and able to hike 10 plus miles per day in rough terrain.
Equipment

Must provide your own backpacking equipment, work pants, and 8” leather boots. Safety (first aid kit, radio,
bear can), trail maintenance tools, and data collecting (camera, GPS unit) tools are provided. Two uniform
shirts are also provided.

Other Details
Work location, schedule, and transportation: SBFC operates on the Forest Service’s bi-weekly, 14-day work
schedule. The Wilderness Crew leader generally works for 9 days at a time, in the field, with office work on either
end of the work hitch. This is followed by 5 days off, every two weeks. Work is required on many weekends and
holidays. Stewardship projects are in the backcountry, and a personal vehicle is required for travel to trailheads.
Housing is available at the remote duty station. Off work travel to and from duty stations is not compensated by
SBFC.
Duty Station: Powell Ranger Station, Clearwater National Forest, ID
Wages: D.O.E., starting at $15.50 per hour
