Xbench instructions

Xbench Quick Guide by Hunnect
After Starting the Xbench software, click Project > New.
A pop-up window will appear. You can drag the file(s) to be checked in that window. The software will
automatically recognize the file type (e.g. Trados Studio File). (If, instead of dragging, you choose to
browse add the files manually (Add > Next > Add file…), the file type will also need to be selected
manually. It important that the Ongoing translation option is checked. After this has been
completed, you can click on the OK button.
A glossary can also be dragged onto the window; if this is a txt file, choose the file type Tab-delimited
Text File. Below, select the option Key Terms, then click OK to proceed.
The added files will appear in the window, and next to the glossary you should see a green star. If
everything is correct, click OK.
Go to the QA tab at the top. In the Check Group box, everything needs to be checked, as well as in
the List of Checks box. The only exception is the Spell check list, where you will need to select only
the target language obviously. (The Spell check option is shown only when the Spell check plugin is
downloaded for the given language, and it is placed in the same folder of the computer as the
Xbench.exe file.)
RU Databridge is a separate plugin for extra checks – it is not available online anymore, thus we will
provide it upon request. It also needs to be placed in the same folder as the exe file, so that it is
shown among the other options of the Check Group box.
Under Options, it is suggested to check the following options:


Case-sensitive inconsistencies
Ignore tags
In some cases, the options Only New Segments and Exclude ICE Segments can also be selected, if the
project manager authorizes to do so.
If everything is OK, click on the Check Ongoing Translation button on the top.
The Spell checker pops up. Any suspected errors are shown in red. If an error is real, it has to be added
to the QA report with the right arrow button (this method is handy because the same error can occur
several times in the text, and thus it might need to be corrected in several places). By the way, the
number of occurrences can be seen on the left side (Instances). After the real spelling errors have all
been added, click OK.
Then the QA report appears. In the Error Description part, you can see the error type. In case of
bilingual Trados Studio files, the errors need to be looked up in the bilingual file. (In older versions,
right-click on the error and choose Edit source.) After correcting all the errors, run Xbench again until
there are no real errors left in the translation. If the errors are looked up and corrected, and the
bilingual file is saved, it is sufficient to press the F5 button, and Xbench will update the report (reload
the bilingual file).
When there are no real errors in the report, choose Tools > Export QA Results… to save the report
file. The export has to be saved in xls format in order for us to be able to open it in Excel.
Before being sent to us, the exported file has to be commented in order to make sure that the
remaining errors are all false positive. This has to be indicated clearly. If there is any additional
note that the translator would like to add to a given error, they can do so.
Other things worth mentioning:
If the Track changes function is turned on in a Trados Studio file, it cannot be verified with Xbench. A
copy has to be saved with accepted changes and approved segments (Translated status), the Xbench
verification must be run on that copy.
Glossaries are usually received from clients in Excel spreadsheets. Two-column (e.g. EN-HU) glossary
tables in Excel can be easily saved in txt (plain text) format for Xbench use: choose File > Save As in
Excel and select the txt option. Otherwise, Multiterm and tmx glossaries can also be imported in
Xbench.
