Windsor~West Hants Pumpkin Festival
Saturday, October 3, 2015
The Windsor~West Hants Pumpkin festival is a member of the Giant Pumpkin Commonwealth
(GPC). The GPC’s mission is to cultivate the hobby of growing giant pumpkins throughout the
world by establishing standards and regulations that ensure quality of fruit, fairness of competition,
recognition of achievement, fellowship and education for all participating growers and weigh-off
sites. There are currently 108 weigh-off sites registered with the GPC for 2015. Check out the GPC
site for weigh-off updates: www.bigpumpkins.com
Weigh-offs are continuing, but currently the largest
pumpkin recorded for 2015 is a 2145.50 pound gourd
grown by Gene McMullen from Streator, Illinois. Last
year, Beni Meier from Switzerland, grew a 2323.70
pound pumpkin. That world record has not been beat.
The heaviest pumpkin at the Windsor~West Hants
Pumpkin Weigh-off was grown by Gerard Ansems,
Steam Mill, Nova Scotia. His gourd at 1415 pounds is
currently ranked 108th in the 2015 GPC sites.
The heaviest squash at the Windsor~West Hants
Pumpkin Weigh-off was grown by Fred Ansems of
Steam Mill, NS, with a weight of 962 pounds. His
gourd is currently ranked 14th in the 2015 GPC.

currently 6th in the 2015 GPC. Currently Switzerland
holds the 2015 GPC record with 7.27 pounds.
Ron Muis of Steam Mill, NS., (centre), is just 1/4
inch shy of the world record for the longest gourd..
Ron also won the AVGVG’s Hilda Dill award for
prettiest pumpkin.
The GPC presents the Howard Dill award at each of its
weigh-off sites. Chosen by a panel of judges, the most
perfect pumpkin is picked for its colour, shape and
texture. This is the only award issued where size does
not matter.
The 2015 GPC Howard Dill Award was presented to Diana MacDonald. The inaugural Dill
Family Farm Choice Award was presented to Fred Ansems.
The Annapolis Valley Giant Vegetable Growers is a not-for profit organization dedicated to the
growing of giant vegetables. The AVGVG presents annually the Hilda Dill Award for the most
perfect pumpkin.
