Students will understand how a well-balanced diet contributes to the physical and mental health of an individual Essential Questions Knowledge & Skill How do the three aspects of health influence weight control? How does the media influence our food choices? How can a balanced diet affect the wellness (or illness) of an individual? Evaluate food labels for nutritional information. I CAN . . . plan a healthy diet based on factors such as age, activity level,, and special concerns. List the six nutrients and describe the role they play in the body. Some teachers cover it in as little as 6 days. The unit plan would look something like the following: (* marks a learning activity) DAY 1 – Powerpoint with notes on the 6 essential nutrients; *Ch 8 Personal inventory; Assign vocabulary DAY 2 – *Clicker review of Chapter 8.1-2; *Graphic organizer for Chapter 8.3-4 DAY 3 – Meal selection and special diets; *Fad diet evaluation (or fast food menu evaluation) DAY 4 – Chapter 9 notes packet, *My plate activity DAY 5 – VIDEO – Food Inc. (available online or on Netflix) DAY 6 – Chapter 13 Fitness concepts, *Experiential learning – students demonstrate the components of fitness & types of exercise DAY 7 – Importance of Sleep; *Review/Re-teach/Reinforcement activity, get study guide for test DAY 8 – UNIT TEST covering Nutrition & Fitness Understanding by Design
