“Weave Baskets from Eastern U.S.” Workshop

Attend a workshop, weave a basket of your choice, and discover a skill used daily in the lives of Native
Americans and early settlers.
Award‐winning basket maker PaƟ English, will conduct two workshops in basket weaving on Saturday, October 13, 2012. These classes will be held in the Liz Smith‐Cox Educa onal studio at the Pickens County Museum of
Art & History. Create the basket of your choice in either a 4‐hour or 6‐hour session and enjoy the sa sfac on of carrying home a finished work of art. “These skills employed by our ancestors have nearly been
forgotten” said Mrs. English, a resident artist and instructor for the
S.C. Arts Commission. “This is the impetus for us to keep the art of
basketry alive.”
Basket weaving involves a variety of skills and these workshops will
explore techniques geared toward Beginning, Intermediate and
Advanced weaving levels. Participants in the workshops will choose
the shape of their basket, select, measure and cut materials, then
weave with natural and dyed materials in many color choices.
A four-hour session is scheduled for Saturday, October 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Participants
in this session will choose to make either A) Woven Fall Indian Corn Decoration; B) 5”-6” Seagrass Egg
Basket; C) Appalachian Market Basket 6” x 10”; or D) 5” Williamsburg Basket. Tuition for this session is
$55 ($50 for Museum Members). All basket making materials and printed instructions with color
photographs are included in tuition. Pre-registration is required.
A six-hour session will be held on the same day, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Participants will choose
to make either a A) South Carolina Palmetto & Crescent Market Basket in natural greens or navy accent
for S.C. state flag symbols; B) 8” Seagrass Egg Basket; C) Hearth/Gathering Basket 8” x 12”; D) 7” x 10”
Williamsburg Basket; E) Round Cherokee Wheel. Tuition for this session is $65 ($60 for Museum
Members). All basket making materials and printed instructions with color photographs are included in
tuition. Pre-registration is required.
Once the student makes their basket choice; they can choose accent colors hand dyed by the
Instructor: Natural Walnut, Cocoa Brown, Wine, Navy, or Green. Again… class fee includes all basket
making materials, handle, tools, printed patterns with color photographs to complete one basket from the

All workshop participants must be pre-registered and pre-paid in order that sufficient materials
can be provided. Deadline for registration is Friday, September 28 and tuition cannot be
reimbursed after that day.
Register by calling the museum at (864) 898-5963. Registration forms are also available at the
Pickens County Museum, 307 Johnson St, located on the corner of Highway 178 and Johnson Street in
Pickens. The museum’s hours of operation are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.,
Thursday from 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m.-.4:30 p.m.
These workshops always fill fast, so be sure to register early to insure your seat.
