Helsinki ~Four seasons, many reasons
Helsinki is a modern European cultural
city whose urban cosmopolitan lifestyle
exists in perfect harmony with nature.
Surrounded by the sea and its own exotic
archipelago, Helsinki offers visitors an
endless number of possibilities. Just as
Helsinki cannot be described in one word,

way. Helsinki really does have something
for everyone.
Life in Helsinki is defined by starkly contrasting seasonal changes. In the summer,
the warmth and permanent daylight invigorate the city. The locals worship the sun
and welcome the heat with open arms. In
the winter, the cosy and mysterious darkness offers its own blanket of warmth,
even in the crisp and snowy outdoors. In
town, Helsinki’s culture explodes into life
with a vast range of events, concerts and
exhibitions.

LATVIA
Jelgava
This pretty city situated on the banks of
the Lielupe river is the provincial capital of Zemgale. It was first mentioned in
historical documents in 1264, when the
Livonian order began to build a wooden
castle on what is now Jelgava. The new
Jelgava castle was built during the reign
of Duke Biron (1737-1769). In 1795 the
Duchy of Courland was united with Russia.
Over the centuries Jelgava developed
into a trade and manufacturing centre.
In the 18th century, Jelgava was Latvia’s
major printing centre. The first Latvian
language newspaper was printed here.
After becoming a rail centre in the 19th
century, the city was nearly destroyed
in WWII. Today, it is the only inland
maritime harbour in Latvia and it’s also
the most significant industrial centre of
the Zemgale region.
Latvia University of Agriculture
The Latvia University of Agriculture
(LLU) is located in Jelgava – an old
cultural city which is only 40 km from
the capital of Latvia – Riga, which offers
a good service of transportation between
both cities. LLU was founded in 1939 and
its oldest faculty is the Faculty of Agriculture, founded in 1863, which has close cooperation with many universities abroad.
LLU has been a rapidly growing institution in time period since Latvia regained
its independence.
We are the third largest university in
Latvia having nine faculties with 6621
both full and part time students and 487
academic staff.
LLU provides education, research,
extension and continuing studies in
agriculture, food industry, forestry,
veterinary medicine, engineering sciences, social sciences and information
technologies.
Latvia University of Agriculture is
the only higher agricultural education
establishment in Latvia and it aims to
promote intellectual potential for rural
development in agriculture; encourage
young people to acquire higher academic and professional education; develop
research; contribute to the cultural development; study, maintain and perfect
the gained experience from the Latvian
people and pass it on to the future generations.
