Element Notes (from 11/10/16) Define Element Simplest pure substance, Cannot be broken down more More than 100, Each one is unique What is a chemical symbol? A short way of representing an element Always 1 capital letter or 1 capital & 1 lowercase Examples: Carbon = C Gold = Au Neon = Ne Describe how are elements organized The Periodic Table of the Elements! Arranged by atomic number and similar properties Define Atom Basic particle that makes up elements Made of protons, neutrons, & electrons Define Molecule A group of 2 more atoms held together by a chemical bond May be 2 of the same type of atom! Example: O2 Define Compound Substance formed by the reaction of 2 or more elements Examples: Water = H2O Table Salt = NaCl Consider the following: All compounds are molecules but not all molecules are compounds. Summary: Everything is made of elements which are arranged in the Periodic Table. The atom is the particle that makes an element. When at least two atoms bond together it makes a molecule. Which atoms from at least 2 different elements bond together it makes a compound.
