Coordination in Compound Sentences Pg. 698 By: Matt Sternesky, Riley Kirejevas, Andrew Pimentel, and Faiz Silat Rules & Uses of Coordination ❖ ❖ Coordınatıon makes for significance and equal value on two or more elements in a sentence ➢ Coordination joins anything that could me made into a sentence such as words, phrases or even an independent clause Compound Sentence - the result of using coordination to combine two sentences ➢ Compound sentences are usually created following a conjunction(and, but, for, either..or) ➢ You can also use punctuation such as a semicolon by itself or paired with a conjunctive adverb(therefore, moreover, etc.) Joining Main Clauses ❖ In the Following sentences you’ll see that removing the coordinating conjunction or semicolon makes the author’s meaning less clear ➢ Coordinating Conjunctions Joining Main Clauses ■ ➢ ➢ “Morbid Curiosity is an occupational hazard for a writer, I suppose. I’ve never been bothered by it before.” Vs. “Morbid curiosity is an occupational hazard for a writer, I suppose, but I’ve never been bothered by it before.” - David Ewing Duncan Semicolons Joining Main Clauses ■ “Nature was then. This is now” Vs. “Nature was then; this is now” - Sven Birkerts Semicolons and Conjunctive Adverbs Joining Main Clauses ■ “Now he no longer let the dog go to the lighted tunnel at once. He put out the light, and then kept the dog waiting a little while before he let him go” Vs. “Now he no longer let the dog go to the lighted tunnel at once; instead, he put out the light, and then kept the dog waiting a little while before he let him go” - Jacob Bronowski Punctuation of Sentences That Contain Coordination ❖ Effects of punctuation➢ ➢ ❖ Comma Splices- when a conjunction or semicolon is omitted or replaced with only a comma between main clauses; this results in splicing the clause ➢ ❖ Comma- creates a pause in a sentence *Semıcolon- creates a full stop in a sentence & joins two complete thoughts Splıcıng- to join loosely or effectively ■ Comma splicing can be resolved by using a coordinating conjunction, semicolon, or period Ex. ➢ ➢ Incorrect: She began by sitting and thinking, soon she was just sitting Correct: She began by sitting and thinking, but soon she was just sitting. Rhetorical and Stylistic Strategy ❖ Writers use coordinating conjunctions to smooth two shorter sentences into a single longer sentence that is more cohesive ➢ The job of conjunctions is to specify the relationship between two ideas. ■ Contrast of ideas are shown using but, yet, or however ■ Cause and effect are shown using thus, for, or therefore ➢ A writer might choose to use a semicolon over a period or a conjunction to signal that two ideas are closely related “Parenting is one of the oldest human experiences; it has been the experience of every generation since the beginning of our species.” - Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi A semicolon may also emphasize balance or alternation ■ ➢ “The garden faded; in its place, the city center rose by her left hand, full of crowding people, blowboats, amd buildings.” - Brian Aldiss A semicolon can link two independent clauses that are parallel except for the pronoun ■ “He did not move; she did not move.” - Brian Aldiss ■ ➢ Caution: Starting a Sentence with a Coordinating Conjunction ❖ ❖ ❖ Some people overuse the conjunctions and and but Because of this books and teachers discourage you not to use these at the beginning of sentences BUT some authors do it because it is very effective and is acceptable if you don't overuse it Polysyndeton and Asyndeton ❖ Conjunctions affect the pace and emphasis of the sentences therefore a writer might choose to include conjunctions or purposely leave out conjunctions. ➢ Polysyndeton: Is the deliberate use of a series of conjunction ■ ““And Joshua, and all of Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had.” - The Bible Polysyndeton while joining words, phrases, and clauses together also speeds up the pace of reading and is often used to create a rhythm in the text Asyndeton: The deliberate omission of conjunctions ● ➢ ■ “This is the villain among you who deceived you, who cheated you, who meant to betray you completely…….” Rhetoric by Aristotle ● Asyndeton separates ideas more distinctly, giving them greater emphasis.
